I've been thinking about relocating from the Hudson River Valley in N.Y. to the Stamford area. The dream is being close to some kind of city life, while being just outside of actual city living.(unless there is something amazing available in a great area of stamford in our price range) Ideally my girlfriend and I would like a suburban town, with a real town feel aka: some shops, maybe a gym, dining and a good community and overall "positive vibe". Also the closer to the LIS, the better, I actively race sailboats there, and would like to continue doing that with a short commute. We will be renting, while saving up some money to buy a house in a yet to be determined town.

The nitty gritty. Half hour or less to Stamford where she will likely work. Under an hour to Harlem, NYC which is where I will work two-three times a week. I know traffic can be rough, but I aim to arrive at 730 am, will this be early enough to avoid the major traffic on 95? Rent should be under 1500, absolutely no more than 1700/month for at least a one/two bedroom or a small private house.

We haven't visited anywhere yet, and plan to in a couple weeks. I'd like to have a few places to look. Would love to have any help you can offer. Thank you.

Your budget works. Although it's pushing it for a 2BR. Expect a modest, older 1BR for that budget in Stamford. You won't likely get a house anywhere near that.

Surrounding towns are more expensive, but may be doable - again, if you stick to a small, older 1BR.

The towns immediately around Stamford are some of the priciest in the country. I think you will need to just live in Stamford itself. There are some nice neighborhoods that are similar to small towns. Glenbrook is one of them and it has its own station on the New Canaan line. Jay

I do realize that the prices are pretty high for the surrounding area. How is stamford for a young(ish) couple 26+28? A 1br is more than adequate, just obviously hoping for more if possible. Certainly not what is needed. Any suggestions for where to look in the Glenbrook area other than craigslist?

Thanks for the replies thusfar

Stamford is decent for twentysomethings. It's not NYC or even New Haven IMO, but it's got its share of nightlife and things to do. And easy access to NYC.
