Don't know why you would want to live there and commute to the Hartford area when there's cheaper towns that offer similar amenities in the Hartford area.

Yeah, agree. The Danbury area isn't convenient to New York or Hartford.

In the Hartford area, you will probably like West Hartford the best. Still, $1,000 won't get you much in that area but it's worth a look. Schools are decent, there is a beautiful downtown area and you're close to colleges (University of Hartford, Central CT Univ, Trinity, UCONN, some CCs).
You will likely get more for your money in a town like Rocky Hill or Wethersfield. They don't have as much charm, but the schools are good and you're still close to quite a bit. Being south of Hartford puts you within range of all of the universities near New Haven (Yale, Quinnipiac, Wesleyan, Univ of New Haven, Southern CT Univ). A little south of Rocky Hill/Wethersfield is Berlin and Cromwell. Very nice towns with good schools.
If charm is important to you, you can always live in a town like Essex and commute to Hartford (about 40 minutes). The eastern CT shoreline (Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Old Saybrook, Mystic, etc) is stunningly beautiful so even if you don't rent there, visit it!
Your budget is tough in CT but you may be able to score something.
The only part of this I do not agree with is your comment on Wetherfield lacking charm. Old Wethersfield has one of the largest grouping of historic older homes in the state. It is very charming. I actually think it is more charming than any part of West Hartford. Even more surprising is that it is not that expensive. Jay

It is quite an amazing area (incredibly old, even by New England standards) - sometimes I think they could do a better job of maintaining the historic district though.
Buying and fixing up one of those places could be a wonderful home for someone with the time..

Not sure if you already made a decision but wanted to just add New Haven in for consideration. Metro North makes commuting to NYC pretty easy (my husband did it daily and liked that he could avoid issues with traffic). There are plenty of universities as someone else previously mentioned and it's commutable to Hartford as well (I commuted that way for a time period and the worst of the traffic was just around Hartford, something you'd run into anywhere you live really). Great neighborhood feel, I love the charm of the shoreline! (east shore area).
