What is the tax implication working in NY vs CT? Does it make sense to live in NY and commute to Stamford from a tax perspective?

I am looking at a job in Stamford while my daughter goes to school in NYC. I don't think I want to be further than Stamford to keep her commute reasonable.

I think it depends on your salary level, and your tolerance for traffic.

You can avert the Fairfield County traffic by doing the Reverse Commute. Many of the shoreline towns in Westchester County have large apartment selections due to its proximity to New York City. Plus, it makes it easier for you to potentially pickup a NYC-based job in future years.

Examples would include:
  • Port Chester (15 minute commute to Stamford)
  • Rye
  • Harrison
  • Mammaroneck
  • New Rochelle (25 minute commute from Stamford)

Taxes aren't that different. It's only when you have to pay the additional NYC tax that it becomes competitive for CT.

So the taxes in NY are about the same as CT?

I've been looking at Larchmont, NY as a compromise for commuting to NYC for my college age kids. There's not a lot for rent there vs Stamford though. I'm willing to do the reverse commute to Stamford for the sake of cutting down the commute for my kids, but not at the added cost of any increase in taxes.

Propert taxes are about two to three times higher in Larchmont compared with Stamford or Greenwich. Income tax is about 3-4% lower as well. Our top tax being a little less than 7% vs 10.85 in NYC limits. I'm not sure what Stylo is referring to.

I would check the train schedules. There are express trains from Stamford that could be a shorter ride than a town like Larchmont. Jay

New York has a higher marginal income tax rate than Connecticut, so even though you are not double-taxed by living there, your tax bill will definitely be higher in New York than in Connecticut.

Larchmont is an uber-expensive community with a very low suppply of rentals, as you noted, and what rentals exist come at a sky-high price.
