Default Moving to CT - Where Should I live?

Hey everyone - Long Time Reader, first time poster!

So here's the deal, I am relocating myself, my wife and 18 month daughter to CT for a job I will be working for in Bristol.

We would like to have a 4+ bedroom house, modern, nice private road, 2500+ square feet and not too far from the big name stores/chain restaurants.

We have started to look in Southington, but so far, a lot of these houses are tiny!!

We were told to also look at Berlin, West Hartford, Rocky Hill, Chesire, Burlington...

One of our main concerns is that I want to be at least 30 mins driving distance of Bristol, but at the same time, closer to the NY border, since we will be driving to see family very often.

Could we start a discussion of other towns (or recommend the ones I listed) that could fit our criteria?

Thanks!

Paul

I'd say $420,000 is the max!

Your goals sound a bit contradictory, wanting a private road, yet close to the big stores. What is your price range? How would you like to commute to New York? EG, would you travel down Route 8, and across 84, or do you go into the city on 91 and 95?

I'd like to suggest Cromwell, as it has some newer housing around the River Highlands TPC golf resort. They run from the lower $400K and up for the size of house you mentioned.

I'd also suggest looking in Bristol itself, as it has experienced growth from the ESPN facility. You will find that many of the other towns you look in do not have much "modern" housing. If it's essential to have a new house, look in the higher growth areas.

Thanks I will take a look at Cromwell.

Private road, I just mean no Thruways, it looks like CT has a ton of Cul De Sacs out there.

Last time I was in Southington, I took CR 8 to I95...

You also might look at Cheshire to the south. There were several newer houses in your price range. The schools are well-rated, though I realize your child is still young. There are several local restaurants in the town. The chain stores are in Meriden and Wallingford.

Burlington is what you want.

You are well within 30 minutes of Bristol, there are nice quiet neighborhoods, and a 10 minute drive away is all the shopping you can handle on RT44 in Canton, Avon and West Simsbury...and you are West of Hartford and Bristol.

Schools are top notch, the town is beautiful.

Cromwell is really not near where the OP wants to be. I agree that Burlington would be a good choice. It is near Bristol, has newer homes and good schools. It is a small somewhat rural town though which I am not sure that the OP wants. Still shopping is not far in Canton, Farmington and Bristol. About the only problem is that Burlington is not toward New York. Jay

That depends on where he is going. If it's NYC, unless he's South of Bristol, it's all the same IMO. If it's upstate, Burlington is at least on the Western side of Hartford.
