Maybe she has friends here? Wanted a change from SC?

Maybe - guess I'm just cynical!

Assuming you do have family/friends here, I'd ask them to put a good word in for you at local businesses they work at, while also looking for part-time work at restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, beaches, and contact a temp agency.

If she has family or friends here, I doubt she would be asking these questions in here.

no reason at all to feel sorry for ya or think you are "stupid" just b/c you r from the south.

Southerners tend to be very friendly polite people from what i have met. i will pm you some job opportunities i have seen.

lots of nite clubs & restaurants in middletown too. ever been a bartender? they tend to hire more girls than guys for that up here.

don't feel bad, CT folks are rather standoffish in some parts of the state. don't take it personally

You didn't say whether you are educated or not, but I'll give this a shot.

My wife and I just moved from out of state and here is what we found to be important.

Have your resume in PERFECT order. No typos or anything. Have someone proofread it. ALSO list your address in Connecticut on it. This is especially important because all of your work experience will be from the state you just moved from! The company needs to be assured that you’re not ‘moving here’ but that you’re here already.
Have your references available! Make sure they know they’ll be getting calls. Make sure they know WHO the calls and what area code they are from.

If possible you should have letters of recommendation from the people you’ve worked for! Usually this should be a superior and not just a co-worker.

ALL of these documents should be available in .doc/.docx and PDF formats.

Now as far as finding out who is hiring, it should be a three step approach:

Send your resume and application to temp services first, IE KForce, Kelly Services, Stewart Staffing, Etc. Often these take a long time to process, but they will look for you. Don’t blindly send the resume, call them first and introduce yourself and get the email where to send your resume from THEM. If you don’t have any experience or education then they may not be interested.

Check the websites of local major companies and institutions (colleges, hospitals, school districts, etc). Take a few hours and fill out their profile pages (MOST companies have a thing you have to fill out before you can apply to any jobs. DO THIS FIRST because from then on you just click ‘apply’ on job openings without having to put up your resume again and again). Off the top of my head, I know the following are hiring for a variety of positions: Hartford Public Schools and several of the insurance companies in Hartford.

Third and probably the most important aspect of a job search is what I call the Dailies! Every day around 10 or 11 am, go through the Craigslist job postings. Just the job category, don’t bother the sub categories. You can safely look in Hartford and New Haven area. Create an excel sheet or word document and paste the links in it then after you look through all of that day and the previous night’s listings apply to ALL of them that fit you. Overreach and underreach here. Let THEM tell you you’re not qualified. I found easily 5-10 jobs every day to apply to. Send your perfect resume to them if they ask for it and write a BRIEF cover letter to them (I tried a detailed one that was too long and did not get as many responses as I did with a 3-4 line email to them). Sometimes these are scams and will ask you to apply on a website in response to your email. Do not click the link.

That is good advice.

Hope the OP finds a job quickly up here. Be nice to hear a Southern accent up in New England for a change.

you don't hardly see any Southerners at all in this area. Probably cuz it's so costly here.

Now what is so WRONG about moving to a new area away from ur friends or family anyway???

I did it myself, once upon a time. I stayed with the one friend I had in Ct. until I found a job.

I looked at the OP's profile, apparently some of the comments on this thread scared her off. Looks like she got a job, though.
