ok so I am being relocated for work and will be working in Norwalk. My wife is also being relocated but in Bristol. Mapquest says Hamden is right in the middle. it says it is 33 miles to each. Does anyone live in hamden and drive to norwalk daily? any advice would help greatly. how long of a drive am I looking at my job is 9-6

I will venture that it will take you about an hour to drive with traffic. Depending where your office is, the train from New Haven to Norwalk may make more sense. Stratford, Shelton or Trumbull may make more sense, as you will be closer to Norwalk and you wife can take Rt. 8 to 84 to get to Bristol.

I agree with the suggestion to look into Shelton/Trumbull area. You can hop on the Merritt and your wife can hop on Route 8. Living in Hamden is unnecessary as it's somewhat out of the way.

I wouldn't live any further north than Orange. Traffic is worse going into Norwalk. Consider the Milford, Shelton, Stratford area.

I'd avoid Milford because it would be slightly backtracking to Bristol. You'd have to get on 15 South to get on Route 8 North.

I really think the OP would be best off in Shelton.

Shelton is closer to Bristol, yes, but I wouldn't backtrack from where I live. I find it to be pretty fast to Route 8 by just going up backroads, and it's a nice drive. Milford Derby Road is my personal choice. If someone lived in north Milford it'd be even quicker. Depending on where the work is in Norwalk and whether they have a shuttle, having a train nearby might be a nice option.

So you'd drive all the way into Orange on Derby Milford Road, and back into Derby just to get on Route 8? That doesn't make much sense IMO.

I stand by Shelton being much easier and more direct in this case - especially if the office location in Norwalk is in the Merrit 7 area (which is where most corporate jobs in Norwalk are).

You make it sound like it's out of the way. See:

Prospect St to Bristol, CT - Google Maps

It's rather direct.

Is your job on the I-95 side of Norwalk or Merritt side of Norwalk? That can make a difference since working on the 95 side will mean extra driving time to cross over. Also, is it on the Westport side of Norwalk, or on Darien/New Caanan side of Norwalk? That, too, makes a difference.

Those variables aside, I am in agreement with the previous posters.

I live in Stratford and used to work in Norwalk (Merritt side right off of Exit 40B) - it can be a bear of a commute. I had co-workers who came from Hamden and it would sometimes take 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on weather and other conditions. For example, a snowy or rainy day will clog traffic around the tunnel.

For your wife, Route 8 is definitely one of the easiest ways to get to Bristol. Living in Trumbull, Stratford or Shelton would make the most sense simply due to ease of access onto Route 8. Backroads (such as Derby-Milford Road) are tricky in the winter...especially since they can be very curvy and windy.

Lastly, if you and your wife aren't familiar with Connecticut, you may think it's illogical to live closer to Norwalk (since it's not the "midway point" between both of your jobs). Trust all of us when we say that traffic in lower Connecticut stinks. It eats up gas since you're doing a lot of stop-and-go. Side story: I would sometimes commute to Hartford (instead of the Norwalk office) and it would take me LESS TIME to get to Hartford.

Perhaps see if one (or both of you) are allowed to work remotely a few times during the week. It'll help keep both of you sane. Good luck!

Sorry, still doesn't make sense to choose Milford over Shelton. You're on back roads for a good 10-15 minutes when, from Shelton, you could be in Naugatuck/Waterbury by that point.

Anyway, you can continue to recommend your beloved Milford for this commute and I'll continue to push them further northwest.
