Seeking info/advise on relocation to Eastern CT
Hello,
My wife and I are wanting to relocate (from Sheffield MA.) within a 30 min drive to her family (Essex-Hadaam). I am interested purchasing about 1-2 acres in rural towns that would have "reasonable" prices for such. Also I would like a town whereby I could operate my woodworking business off the property. Preferrably one structure (barn) that would both house my shop and living quarters. Also as another possibility (if permitted) is to erect a hoop type structure (fabric walls) for my shop. We want to be within 30 min. or so drive to the shore, shopping and some entertainment. We keep our property nice and would want to be in an area where neighbors do the same but do realize a trade off on price. I thought that Northeast CT might be an area that perhaps could meet our criteria but don't know town specifics. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tony - there are many towns in eastern Connecticut that would be well suited for your needs. I would suggest looking in Windham county which is probably the least expensive overall. Towns such as Thompson, Woodstock, Pomfret, Putnam and killingly are all reasonably priced. Jay

I concur with what Jay has said, there are many towns in northeastern and eastern CT that would have land/property within your price range.
Going east from East Haddam and Essex 30 minutes you could consider Moodus, Salem, Gilman and Bozrah. The other towns mentioned are more then 30 minutes away- but atre great choices.
You might also consider Lebanon, Amston, and Scotland

Thanks JayCT and skytrekker, do you have any guestimates on the range per acre cost in those towns? I would not want to be in a subdivision. Zoning in those towns are ameable to live/work situations? Thanks again

I forgot one other important requirement, decent internet connection service. What is the norm for these towns regarding online service providers. Thanks

North Stonington Tony, is by the Rhode Island border- more then the 30 minute time frame you suggested you desired. It is a very nice town in fact, with access to both the CT beaches and those in Rhode Island.
I have no idea what the cost is per acre-perhaps a Realtor member here could help you- or seek advice from one in the areas you desire in eastern CT.
As for internet service, DSL would usually be available in rural eastern CT- if you are closer to Norwich and New London and Groton, both DSL and Cable will be easy to acquire.

I believe that North Stonington is one of the more expensive towns in the area. It is very nice but is not within 30 minutes of East Haddam (Thanks for catching that Skytrekker). I would look at towns like Colchester, Lebanon, Bozrah and Franklin. They would be within 30 minutes of most of East Haddam. Salam has gotten pretty pricey in recent years but it may be an option. Multi-acre property could be pruchased here for around $100 to $125k depending on the size and quality of the property. Check Realtor.com for listings. Jay
