For the kind of lifestyle that you've indicated you'd like - I think you were looking for an Jeep club/ off roading, and fishing. etc. , you would probably be happiest in either the north east corner of the state or the north west corner. Those are the two most rural areas but some towns are within commutable distance to Hartford. Eastern CT is the least expensive part of the state.

So it would likely be the general Hartford area for the most job prospects allowing you to live in either direction. Danbury a second option.

This could work for you, if you could come debt free and accept the extra tax burden/ heating expenses /living expenses of CT. I wouldn't try to start a business first thing. Work for someone and learn the local market.

One thing you won't find here is the dreaded homeowner association so you can park your truck in your driveway and leave your garage door up too -lol

Kent, Bantam, & Litchfield are all great places to look for a place to live. The closest "job town" is Torrington but you could commute down to Danbury everyday. Finding a job is #1. You will need to build up a repertoire with residents and see how things are done in the area before starting your own business. I hope you find an affordable place you like and a good job.

Since many people pointed out the nw corner to you Steven, have you wrenched anywheres else besides a dealer.?? If you like this area theres a few specialty, vintage / race / high end independent shops around since Lime Rock Park http://www.limerock.com/ is here if that interests you at all. I know many are always looking for REALLY good, hard working techs. as far as starting your own indy shop it seems those that pick a specialty, like vws, subarus, volvos, bmws, etc. and work hard to make a goid rep with customer service and knowing their niche well, do very good, with all the work they can handle, and loyal cutomers that will not complain about maybe spending more for premium knowledge and service. Since you talked about your expanding hybrid training there MIGHT be a market around the NW corner for a hybrid specialty shop. Plenty of older escape, lexus h, and prius running around here as well. Just a thought.

There are plenty of dealerships and shops in New Milford. Might not be necessary to go to Danbury.

You might try to find a job in one of the Farmington River Valley suburbs of Hartford like Avon, Simsbury, Canton or Granby and then live further out in a town like Barkhamsted, New Hartford, Colebrook or Hartland. The Farmington River Valley is an affluent outer suburb of Hartford and there are a number of car dealers and auto repair places along Route 44 or Route 10. Just a thought. Jay

This!
I was just going to say this. FRV is very affluent. Granby is a very cute town, lots of farms and charm with a more suburban center. If you go out a bit west to Hartland and Barkhamsted, the towns get a bit smaller and less suburban. Avon and Simsbury are affluent but more suburban and less "small town-like." But the commute between these towns isn't bad at all. There are a lot of car dealerships and repair places around the area.

The commute to Hartford or West Hartford is only around 30 minutes if you want to go work somewhere more urban while living in a smaller town.
