Wondering if it's outdated, in these storm-hit (and tree-line-tangled) times, to have cable TV provided by "cable" companies (AT&T, Comcast) versus satellite providers (DirectTV and/or The Dish). After our power was restored (4 days after storm & not complaining about that), it took several more days for our Comcast service (web connection & TV) restored. Can anybody tell me if their service went even uninterrupted by a satellite provider, or if their reconnection was immediate with power restoration? I'm especially interested to hear from people from shoreline towns, but welcome anyone's info. Thanks. And I hope everyone is doing OK. I don't mean to be selfish. I'm really tired of feeling ripped-off and frustrated by Comcast.

I can't say how satellite would compare today, but i do know that when i had Dish awhile back, it was very susceptible to any type of imperfect weather. And i wasn't in a rural area. It would have to be free to get me to try it again....

As long as the dish isn't damaged, you will not lose service. Last October, I lost power for 10 days. I fired up the generator and watched DirecTV the entire time. It's a straight shot from your dish to space, no need for cable lines.

As far as other weather related disruptions, I find them to be minimal with DirecTV. I've actually had more cable disruptions than satellite issues over the past 7 years.

When I was in Stamford by the water DirecTV didnt even flicker in blizzards or intense lightning. For some reason now it gets disrupted ewith moderate rains. I cant use the "woodsy" excuse since it points to the sky. Strange.

Also want to note, Cablevision never went out during Sandy. I had internet the whole time. Guess it all depends on what wires goes down. Underground and wireless are the ways to go lately. Aside from Solar.

We're on the shoreline. (Guilford). Power was out for six days, but when it returned on Sunday the comcast cable tv and internet started up fine. We did have DirectTV at our old house in Mass. and I had no complaints at all. Probably once or twice a year we would lose the signal due to weather, but for the amount of money we were saving over comcast, it was well worth it. (We kept comcast internet up there.) DirectTV was a great company to deal with. The whole process of ending service was painless. Nothing is painless when dealing with comcast. It was easier to start with comcast here, but we plan to switch over TV to directTV soon.....I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I really, really don't like comcast as a company.

I'll trade cable providers with you.

I have friends who lost power for a week, but never lost DirectTV. If you have a generator and don't mind the look of a sat dish on your roof, it is worth looking into.
