Possible relocation to CT (Hartford County)
My husband has been offered a job in Collinsville. We were there this past weekend and had a chance to drive around a little bit to get a feel for the area. I really liked Simsbury, but I am not sure if that would be within our reach. Does anyone know what an average salary would be for someone living in Simsbury?
We would definitely have to rent a place first, couldn't buy a home right now. It's very important that the schools/neighborhoods would be good, since we have a child in elementary school. My husband was thinking of looking into Canton, because it appeared to be a bit cheaper. Is Canton a nice area for a young family?
Any suggestions or info would be much appreciated!

Both Canton and Simsbury are very fine towns with excellent school systems. Housing prices are high (this depends however where you are coming from)
Median home prices are likely to be over 325K in both towns.

Simsbury is a great town along with Canton. You might also want to consider Avon. Avon would be a little bit farther from Collinsville and some homes might be a little more expensive but if you are going to be making a move to the Farmington Valley Avon is truly the most exclusive community in all of Greater Hartford. Avon also has a large tax base due to the fact that is home to many retailers along Route 44 which helps bring some releif to residents.

Simsbury and Canton are excellent places for families with great schools. There are apartments and condos for rent in both towns but you need to check listings to see if they are affordable to you. You also might want to consider the Unionville section of Farmington. It is an older mill village with a number of rentals that is not far from Collinsville. Good luck and welcome to CT. Jay

You might want to check out Southington, Southington, Southington, or Southington, because it seems like the only town to which people want to move.

I believe that you are joking. Southington is no where near Bradley Airport. Please do not make a recommendation that is not in the OP's best interest unless you note that you are not serious. Someone from out of state who does not know the area might waste time looking at this town. It also places this Board credibilty in question. Jay

Burlington and New Hartford also border with Canton and both towns have excellent school systems. Both are in regional school districts with excellent report cards. It might be hard to find rentals in those towns though cause they are fairly rural. Your best bet for a rental might be Unionville. It's a short drive down rte 177 from Collinsville. What's your budget for rent though, cause there may even be some nice homes/condos to rent closer to his job!

If you only need to rent a two bedroom than you should not have a problem finding a place in New Hartford but a three bedroom would be hard to come by. Collinsville is actually part of Canton and you should have pleanty of luck finding an apartment right in town. Burlington would also be a good choice but apartments will be harder to come by. Check out Foothills Trader - News - Weekly Features to look for apartments in the area. Good luck.
Also if you are willing to deal with about a 20 min commute your best deals will be found in Winsted and Torrington for rents. Both are an easy drive to Collinsville. The schools are not rated as well as the Canton Avon area but you can get a lot more house for the money and the towns are both very nice.

There are also parts of Bristol that are nice--and it borders on Farmington. Canton isn't too far, and the school system in Bristol is very good--I have 2 children who have just finished. Bristol is particularly good if you have children with special education needs. They are big enough to be able to provide good services, and the former Superintendent was the head of the Special Ed Dept for many years...

Bristol schools perform under the State average on the Connecticut Mastery Tests and have class sizes in the upper grades that are a bit high (over 20 students per class). That is not to say that the schools aren't good there, but there are other towns in the area that have better scores that would be close to Collinsville. JMHO Jay
