Default Relocating From Fairfield CT to Canton CT

Is Canton a good place for a family with young kids? I have read the schools are good, but am trying to get more statistics. I saw some houses in Canton - $700's/800's which gets you a lot more than in Fairfield CT, but I wonder if the town offers much to families. We are thinking of relocating to get back to a small town feeling, but yet, still have some nice things for our family. It seems that Avon is considered "THE" place to live? I prefer a happy medium - where people are friendly, down to earth. We don't need "elite" - just a secure place for my kids to grow up. Commuting is not an issue.

Really any of the towns in the Farmington River Valley are nice. This includes Simsbury, Farmington, Avon and Canton. You would have more family related things to do in Simsbury because it is a larger town and a little more upscale than Canton, but not quite Avon either. It is a little more diverse which helps keep it a little more grounded. Simsbury schools are considered excellent, one of the highest rated in the state. My inlaws live ther and love it. It is quite and picturesque and has a lot going for it. You could get a very nice home in your price range there. Jay

Do you have any reservations about buying in this market at this time? I am looking to move into CT, but the market has me a bit hesitant.

The market in most of Connecticut is not as bad as different parts of the country. Historically, it has not had the big boom and bust cycles of other states and is generally known for being a land of steady habits. No one can tell where the market is going but barring any major downtrun in the economy or a major event that significantly impacts the economy, buying a reasonable home should not be a problem. no, I don't have many reservations currently. Like JayCT wrote - CT has not been so hard hit as other places. Fairfield County may have slowed down "a bit" for selling, but houses still move. A couple of years ago, a house would go very quickly and sometimes involved a bidding war. That part may not be as prevelant, but houses are selling & people are buying in this area.

Jojofree - I would not call it a "stuffy elite feel" but it is an upscale suburb that has a lot of corporate managers and executive families. There are always people moving in and out so there is always the chance to meet new people from all over the country and world. Jay

I live in Simsbury and its wonderful. I think its also a bonus being closer to New York City for weedend trips than the eastern suburbs of Hartford. The general Farmington Valley area is nice through and through; in fact, its the nicest area in Greater Hartford if you can afford it, at least in my opinion.
