Default Commute to Greenwich from Sherman/Bridgewater

Hi all,

We are considering a move to either Sherman or Bridgewater. Can anyone share experiences with traffic travelling from either of these areas to Greenwich. I work in Greenwich and would need to commute via Route 22 (or back roads) to 84 to 684 from Sherman, or route 7 to 84 to 684 from Bridgewater.

I would be commuting during typical rush hours, i.e. between 7 - 8 in the morning, and 4:30 - 6 in the evening.

I am familiar with the drive and traffic patterns from 684 in Katonah on down, (as I do it everyday now!) so just need help with the traffic above this.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!!

thanks!

Both towns (Bridgewater & Sherman) are some distance away from Greenwich.

Sherman is located near the northern shores of Candlewood lake. The driving scenario as you speak into NY State and route 22 south to I 84 and I 684 is going to be one hell of a commute-around 50 miles one way. As for the hours you specified- you would encounter traffic.

As far as Bridgewater to Greenwich, west from Bridgewater to US 202 and 7 south, or CT 133 south to US 7 to The Merritt pkwy south into Greenwich- another tough commute.

From Sherman to Greenwich is about 45 to 50 miles each way depending where you start and end. With no traffic this would take about an hour, With traffic 90 minutes or more.

Bridgewater is even further and you would have to deal with traffic on I-84 heading into Danbury. That trip would probably be 2 hours in traffic, may be a little under. Not fun to me. JMHO Jay

Another option would be to drive into Danbury and take the train to Greenwich.

The 7:30am train gets you to Greenwich at 8:40.

We are looking at homes only in the southern part of Sherman, near NY and in the lower part of Bridgewater, near rt 133 and Brookfield. According to mapquest, these areas are about 45 miles to my office, from Sherman, and 47 - 48 from Bridgewater.

I think (!!!??) I can deal with 45 - 48 mile commutes as long as the traffic flows. Of course the big million dollar question on an average day, how bad is the traffic.

JayCT, you mention the traffic on 84 to Danbury. Do you know if it gets backed up in that area (again on an average day, no snow, accident etc).

I hadn't thought about the train; I'll have to look into that a bit. Other option is to play with my hours so I go in early and leave a bit early.

thanks all!

Have not been to Sherman but have been to Bridgewater which is beautiful.

During the evening hours, I84 is always congested between exits 2 before the mall all the way to exit 9 Newtown/Brookfield. There is more congestion during the summer on Friday's.

The train tip could be a better way to get to Greenwich from Danbury.

Good Luck.

GSB1

Allot of the roads will have two way traffic and lights- if living near the Brookfield line near 133, you will hit traffic on US 202 and then on I 84 west till you exit south on US 7 south to the Merritt-lots of lights; and traffic will will be heaviest on Monday and Friday. An alternative would be to take state road 58 south from near Bethel- the traffic here would be less- then 138 to the Merritt south.

Where does 138 leave me on the Merritt South? I'm trying to stay away from the Merritt, as much as possible, as I hear horror stories about it from colleagues in the office that commute down to Greenwich on this road.

that's why I am trying to stick with the 84 to 684 route. my office in Greenwich is pretty close to the NY border (Armonk and Port chester), so 684 works nicely.

Once they finish the super 7 extension, won't that help me a bit (Of course I may be so exhausted by then!!)
