I drive this route all the time to get to my inlaws in VT. From Danbury, I would take Rt 7 all the way. If you lived closer to Rt 8 I would suggest that, but going from Danbury to Waterbury negates any advantage of Rt 8. I find 22 to be slower than 7, and the Taconic is really out of the way. Great Barrington can have some traffic, especially on the weekends, and Pittsfield always seems to have traffic. Remember that the traffic on 7 tends to travel a good 10 to 15 mph (or more) over the speed limit, so the actual travel time will be less than the estimates on Google or your nav.

It's only a 25 minute drive and not only does it put you at the foot of Route 8, you're also about 6-8 miles north of where Danbury sits.

I ended up doing 84 to 8 since the school was pretty much right off 8. Left at 3:55, got there about 6:30 pretty much as google maps said. There is absolutely NOTHING up there once you cross the border

There is really nothing on the CT side either till you get into the center of the state.

You can be in Kent (or further) by that time if you stay on 7. And you're assuming no traffic on 84, which is not a given. The main benefit on 8 is the highway from Waterbury to Canton, which is negated by the 25 + min drive on 84 from Danbury to Waterbury. After that 8 is a back road which tends to be slower than the equivalent route on 7.
