My relocation to the Stamford area from the UK is looking pretty imminent. What I now need to do is find temporary accommodation for when we arrive, for a month or two, until we find a permanent home.

I'm aware of Avalon, and other providers of furnished apartments but the ones I've found on the web seem very expensive and aren't really in my preferred locations.

One thought is that since we'll need somewhere for the Dec/Jan/Feb timeframe then a winter let on an empty vacation apartment or house might be something that could work.

So what I need is some advice on where to look next. Here are my criteria:

Ideally around Fairfield (Town)
2+ beds
Furnished (our stuff won't arive from the UK for about a month)
between 2-3K per month
Single family home or apartment/condo.
Not Bridgeport.
Good neighbourhood
Needed for approx 1 month, maybe two. week by week basis would be ideal.

If anyone is aware of anything that fits the bill or of any sites that might list winter lets on vacation properties that would be really useful.

Thanks
Sylko

Sylko - There is limited amount of such temporary housing in hte area. There are vacation homes in Fairfield but they noramllly get rented to college students or are not habitable in the winter months (meaning no heat). Check craigslist.com for places. You might even try local hotels for that length of stay. They may offer a deal for a long term stay. Also note that Bridgeport is not as bad as it is made out to be. Most of the city is very nice. For a short term stay it would be fine. Good luck and welcome to Connecticut. Jay

Default tip

a tip for looking on craigslist in case you are new to it. Fairfield area apartments are listed in the New York City pages of craigslist. After clicking on the apartments link, you have to click on the FCT tab at the top to narrow the search.

Another approach would be to try forrent.com. Specify that you are looking for short-term leases. If you are able to find a suitable apartment you can either have the management company arrange for furnishing or you can arrange it yourself through CORT or other furniture rental companies.

Also try corporatehousingbyowner.com

Good luck!

There is a Residence Inn in Milford....perhaps if you call (their nightly rate would put it at $4500/month) I understand there can be discounts for longer term stays, and breakfast and internet access are included.......

There is an apartment complex in Stamford right off Hoyt Street. It's not too far from downtown Stamford. It's called Royal Pavillion, and offers fully furnished apartments for around 2200/month. The building is well maintained, but it is not one of the best apartments (in STM, you'll seldom find any housing that is below the 3000 USD range furnished in the downtown area). I believe they also have a month-to-month option. Alternatively, Hoyt Bedford (140 Hoyt Street) has a pretty decent rent range - about 2000 for 2 BR 1 Bath but unfurnished. If you really think of it, you can get good cheap furniture from IKEA in New Haven, CT for around 1G. That should offset the extra rent you seem to be willing to pay for a 'furnished' apartment (and probably a smarter move too).
