I am going to be working full-time in Stamford and I am interested in renting a place. I am looking to pay 1500-1800 a month and I don't want my commute to exceed a 30 minute drive. What areas would I be able to afford that kind of rent? I have looked at places online in Stamford and Norwalk and the prices look to be about the same. However, I am wary of some of the crime stats in South Norwalk. I guess my question is: Are there any known unsafe areas in either town that I need to be concerned about? My work often ends late (around midnight).

The part of South Norwalk that is less safe is to the west and south of the train station. The area to the north and east around Washington Street is fine. There are many apartments in that area so try to find somehting in one of them.

In Stamford, downtown is very safe. The area south of the train station is transitioning with a number of beautiful new buildings going up. Stay away from anything west of the river and more or less south of the hospital, this is the most questionable part of Stamford. Others may have additional areas to be careful of but usually if it looks to be a bargain, there is usually a reason. Jay

Stamford and Norwalk are very similar cities, though Stamford has more of a "corporate" atmosphere to it (though many companies, such as Priceline.com, Diageo foods and the US headquarters of Virgin Atlantic Airways are in Norwalk). Norwalk is (just very very slightly) cheaper for housing, however, if you are driving to work during rush hours it can take a very long time to travel the <10 miles from Norwalk to Stamford, the traffic honestly almost rivals L.A. What Jay said about specific neighborhoods is correct and a lot better than I would know.
