That 684 commute is a great suggestion. Much less traffic than 95/15. Your money will go far in Ridgefield and it's a really nice town. Its town center has a similar charm to New Canaan.

The morning commute on the parkway generally isn't bad once you get past Exit 36. In the evening though, it will be slow going.

Absolutely, I think Ridgefield is more on the quaint side. It's not quite as... upscale/fancy. Nothing wrong with upscale, but it feels less New England than Ridgefield IMO.
They both have beautiful town centers so it's a bit of splitting hairs at that point.
Of course the main factor is you get double the house in Ridgefield for the same price.
There is no question that both towns are very quaint. New Canaan is a bit more developed but still has that woodsy feel.
The major difference is that New Canaan is undoubtedly more exclusive. It's has become a big money, corporate town. Ridgefield, while still very affluent, is more just a white collar town with middle to upper level managers.
You definitely get more for your money in Ridgefield, and since Ridgefield's schools are equally as fantastic, it's the better bang for your buck IMO.

I think Ridgefield schools are even more pressure cooker actually, judging by the size of their student body who took AP
While New Canaan and Darien are both excellent towns (among the most desirable in the country) I do agree with the suggestion to consider Greenwich. It too is an expensive and desirable town but it is a lot closer to Rye than New Canaan and you do not have to deal with the issues of getting past Stamford traffic everyday. Ridgefield is also very nice but not quite as nice as New Canaan. That may be hard to believe from anyone that has been there since it is still stunning. Still the commute distance to Rye is further but not necessarily harder since you avoing going through a major city. Jay

I don't know that I agree with that at all. It depends on your definition of "nice". If nice to you means wealthier, then yes, New Canaan is nicer. I think Ridgefield is nicer, where homes are on larger lots and people generally more down to earth.
