My boyfriend and I will be moving to CT this summer and are starting to look at town's to move to. We are will be renting a one bedroom apartment and would like to stay around or below $900/month. We like the idea of living in a small town that you can walk to a coffee shop or restaurants. If you could suggest some nice small town's or even a nice neighborhood or area in New Haven.

$900 is definitely doable in parts of New Haven if you're OK with a modest apartment. Downtown might be tough at that price, but you might be able to find something around Wooster Square, East Rock, or Westville. All safe areas.

Downtown Milford, Branford, Wallingford and Middletown also fit your description of a small walkable town in the New Haven area. Middletown is the cheapest, but also the furthest from New Haven. Milford is the most expensive - but even in Milford you can sometimes find modest $900 apartments if you look hard enough. Branford and Milford both have really picturesque town centers. If you up your budget to $1000, you open up many more possibilities. Maybe try to find an apartment in the $1000-$1100 range with util. included. Often times utilities can exceed $200 a month in the winter, so it might make financial sense.

I completely agree with Stylo - Milford and Branford is probably where you want to look. I actually know someone who will be renting an apartment in downtown Branford. Contact me if interested.
