New first for me tonight in New Fairfield: the screams of a fisher cat! I've lived in this neck of the woods for 18 years, and never heard one until tonight. Pretty unsettling for sure -- the sound will make your hair stand on end -- but kind of cool ...

That is cool. I know we have them, but I've never seen one. I've heard some freaky screams from our woods at night, but nothing quite like a fisher cat.

Mountain lions? Our daughter said she saw one in our yard, but when we called the town animal control people, they laughed at us. They said it was a bobcat and she was mistaken. And this was after the one was killed on the Merritt.

I've seen a mountain lion in Middlebury. I've seen bobcats too so I definitely know the difference! I also one saw a dead fisher cat on the beach at Silver Sands. It was so odd, it was off season so it was pretty empty there. It was just lying dead in the sand near the water. It looked unharmed. I didn't know what it was at the time and made mental notes so I could research it later (the days before cell phones).
