Bridgeport
I am a female and live in Stamford and would like to attend an event at The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT. I will most likely take the train into Bridgeport from Stamford.
I heard that Bridgeport is very unsafe. With that said, how safe is it around the Arena in Bridgeport? Is it safe to walk from the train station to the Arena? (I am not sure how far the arena is from the train station)
Any insight would be much appreciated
Thanks

Hi, the Arena is right there. You get off the train, cross under and walk on a well lit walkway right to the arena. 50 yards or so? There are usually police in the area.

The walk will be less than 5 minutes. It is a little dark in the area but there will be plenty of people outside the arena, parking garage, and train station so it is rather safe.

Is Bridgeport really as dangerous as people make it out to be?

Bridgeport is ugly, rundown and decaying. It is not Oakland, California but it is very bad compared to Stamford. in 2005, Bridgeport had 13 murders, Stamford had 1. Bridgeport had three times more assaults, aggravated assaults and robberies than Stamford. I have been to Bridgeport many times and it is so ugly! I would never live there

My co-worker grew up there and was working there until this Spring. The stories he's told me would curl your hair, even just the stories about what would happen in the parking lot after work. It's really sad.

Bridgeport is not nearly as bad as it is made out to be. It has its bad areas and it has its good areas like any other major city. Lets face it, there are not many cities in this country like Stamford, so comparing Bridgeport to Stamford is like comparing apples to oranges. The city is old (like most New England cities) and needs some improvements which is really happening now. I think that helps make it charming which much of Stamford seems to lack IMHO. The arena is located downtown a couple of blocks from the train station. It is safe to walk form the train station to the arena. I am sure there will be many other people doing the same thing. Jay

AMEN to all of the above. Lukeache is absolutely correct. It is amazing to me how the surrounding suburbs of a city such as Bridgeport can be so amazingly safe, beautiful, and well-off--whereas the city of Bridgeport itself is a place that time seems to have forgotten. It's a very ugly city--compared to most other cities I've been to--and especially to cities in CT.

I agree with some of your statements regarding Stamford. I live in Stamford and it is one of the cleanest, quietest and safest cities I've ever been to--with the exception of a small west side pocket and portions of the south end.
Bridgeport has a long way to go--but I do agree with you that things are now changing in some areas of the city. The city has just had too many corrupt governments, a bad history with manufacturing leaving, and too high property taxes. I hope it turns around!

You are suggesting that Bridgeport is unsafe??? Did something happen to you there?? I lived there as a kid in the 80's and early 90's when it was at it's worst and NOTHING ever happened to me. Lets face it you really don't know the city of Bridgeport do you? It is like any city in the Northeast, it has nice areas and it has run down areas.
You are a real estate agent in Brooklyn so you know very well that you could drive a client that has never been to Brooklyn to Brownsville or East New York and they would have a very different experience than if you showed them Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope.
