I will be commuting to NYC daily so I'm trying to decide which would be better Danbury or Stamford. I have two small children so want a family friendly area with nice schools. Any feedback would be great. This DC girl has no idea what I'm getting into.
Thanks

The Danbury area will be a little more affordable, but it will be a tough commute to NYC daily. Stamford is easier, but the areas with good schools will cost $$$$.

What's your price range?

Stamford schools up to high school are generally fine, so that could be an option. Even the high school is not terrible, I know several people who went or had kids there and were fine. The towns around Stamford are some of the most expensive in the country.

Commuting from the Danbury area would be pretty brutal. You'd be better off with the area around Bridgeport.

Budget is everything in this case.

Like Stylo said, it's all about budget in this area of the state. Stamford is the better choice if you can afford it.

Stick to Stamford then. You can get a nice condo or small SFH for 400.

You could also look at Fairfield. Better schools but 25 extra minutes on the train.

Don't go to danbury, 5 hours door to door commute every day, you will drive yourself crazy. I would go with with a condo in stamford and you cannot ask too much about school. Also, you should checkout towns around Bridgeport, they are closer to nyc than Danbury with better schools.

With small kids entering school, I would not consider either Danbury or Stamford, particularly if you want good schools. The Danbury area is more affordable with nice homes in adjacent towns (Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield) in your price range. Your husband however will have to drive to Southeast Station in New York to catch the train so depending where you live it could add 15 to 30 minutes to the 80 minute train ride.

Fairfield is about the same commuting distance from Manhattan as Southeast but the drive will likely be shorter to a station. There are three in Fairfield: Fairfield Center, Fairfield Metro and Southport. There are many nice but somewhat modest homes in your price range and the schools are excellent. There is a nice downtown, great parks and beaches and a lot of good family activities. I think you will like it there. Jay

Fairfield is a shorter train ride than Southeast. Southeast is more comparable to Stratford/Milford in ride time.
