Seafood pickings can be slim in Fairfield County and Litchfield County. In Branford, Exit 56 off of I-95 North is the USS Chowder Pot. I haven't been there in years but from people I talk to it's not too bad.
Still, one of the best places in CT for that coastal atmosphere and good seafood (not just fried seafood) is the S&P Oyster Company in Mystic Center.
Also the Flanders Fish House in Niantic (Exit 74 off of I-95 North) is suppose to be one of the best. It's more of a family style place.
I can name a dozen more, but it depends on what type of restaurant your looking for.

I ate at Carmen Anthony's Fish house in Woodbury a week ago and it was excellent. we also like the Saybrooke Fish house but they are not in Fairfield or Litchfield couonty. The Chowder Pot is good but not great. Never overly thrilled me and I do not know why. Lenny and Joe's fishtail in Westbrook or Madison is excellent too. JMHO Jay

Bumping for more suggestions.
We are looking to take some out of town guests out for a seafood dinner anywhere on the shoreline, but preferably between Branford and Old Saybrook. Since we are new to the area, we have no idea where to take them. We've been to Lenny and Joe's in Madison, but are looking for something a little nicer. Any suggestions?

Lenny and Joe's is very good. Old Saybrook Fish is in Saybrook and I believe Rocky Hill or Cromwell-- there are other restaurants that do not specialize in seafood alone that can be good as well.

You stole my thunder regarding Lenny and Joe's
Delicious food, great service - BUT, bring some snacks, as you wait for a table. Lines are HUGE, especially at the height of summer!
Enjoy!

The Crabshell in Stamford, on Stamford Harbor, is consistently good. Not amazing or great, but every time I've been, the food has been really consistently good. The oysters, clams, mussels have always been delicious everytime I've gone. It is crowded with a big singles scene hanging out by the bar (with some college too)--but the water views are beautiful. When done eating, you can walk along the boardwalk on the water.

ARe you talking about Lenny and Joe's in Madison or the one in Westbrook. I personally like L and J in Madison, it's great for the kids. But my mother would have a stroke if I suggested we eat outside. Is Lenny and Joe's in Westbrook more of a restaurant?
Also, I love the Saybrook Fish house, but my husband told me it closed a few months ago . I did a google search and their website is still up, so I'm hoping he was mistaken!
Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming!

Scribner's in the Woodmont section of Milford is always excellent if a tad pricey. And the Shell Station in Stratford Center is a pretty good local place, although it probably wouldn't wow out-of-state relatives and provide them with memories for a lifetime.

The Saybrook Fish House on the Silas Deane Highway in Rocky Hill is still there. The original location in Old Saybrook closed years ago. I know it reopened with another name but thought that closed too. Jay
