I don't understand the hesitancy to live in Stamford at all. That's just me.

I'll check it out, but it just seems too urban/busy for me. We'll see.

Nep: I've said this before and it bears repeating. You're going to find most of Westchester county just as built up and even busier. Far northern Westchester would suit you more. But then travel times get worse and apartments far fewer. You're also not to find a two bedroom apartment for $ 1500. You're not going to find a decent one bedroom for that amount of money.

Perhaps rather than figuring how much NY vs. CT tax you're going to pay, you might want to start looking at the real estate sites for rentals and deal with your immediate problem which is housing. Tax is only a problem if you're buying.

But it's been said time and time again that only downtown is urban/busy, and that makes up for a small part of the landmass that is Stamford. Remember, Stamford is much larger in land size than New Haven or Hartford. It has a lot of suburban and even areas that approaching rural (of course, those are mostly large SFH's).

Well, Bedford/Armonk would fit the bill, and are shorter commutes - BUT they are very expensive and rentals are few and far between. A friend rents an in-law apartment in Bedford for $2500/month.

Bedford, Armonk to me are northern Westchester- lol . Nep seems to be thinking of Westchester for easy proximity to NYC for gay scene.

However, anything with a quick 30-35 minute train commute to the city and a not too far commute to Stamford would be White Plains and south & east. Where you find apartments in that area is going to be way too built up for Nep. Rental wise, of course, you pay through the nose for the fast commute to downtown.

Good thing he's gong to take some drives to look around and has a little bit of time to explore before making a housing decision.

Saving 10 minutes on the train vs. Stamford is not worth it IMO.

And a little bit of time to get rid of his false assumptions that Fairfield County is a sprawling, characterless suburb of NYC.

Since I'm on a tight budget, I am only able to look at apartments that are under $1,600. My god, it's quite a challenge to find a 1 br for that price that's not in a sketchy or overdeveloped area, and a reasonable commute. Complexes and pretty much out of question. FML

Wait, what? It's extremely easy to find a 1BR in a non-sketchy, non-urban area in/near Stamford for that price.
