My husband and I would like to be a little more social this summer and we are looking for events in Connecticut that are free or cheap to attend. We love to drive to a new town, walk around historic areas, visit old buildings and good museums, attend farm markets, concerts, plays, festivals, see new places, hike in new parks, go to beaches, etc. However, I am having a hard time finding one source that centralizes all these events so that we can look it up by calendar.

If you know of any upcoming events that are worth going to, PLEASE post it here, it would be a great help to us and to others, I think. But please only post those events/places that YOU really like. Sometimes on a website they advertise a museum and when you go there, you see only one room of boring stuff. Examples of things we've enjoyed in the past: Shakespeare on the Air, New Canaan Farmer's market (every Saturday in the summer), Stamford Women's Expo, Georgetown Day Festival, Norwalk Beach, where they sometimes have concerts, Chowder Fest, etc.

BIG thanks in advance!

PS: Georgetown Day Festival is on June 9am-6pm, rain or shine. We went there last year. It's not worth driving a long distance to, but if you are in the area, they have music, street vendors and food, and it's better than staying home.

Have you checked the library for free or reduced passes to area venues? I'm taking the grands to the Peabody Museum in New Haven. Our library also sponsors free speakers on a variety of subject, and classes in different crafts. You'll probably have to go town by town to look for festivals, free concerts, etc.

Well, it's already passed now, but for the future - Meriden has the Daffodil Festival in late April every year. I've never been, but my friends takes her kids every year. At night they have fireworks. To my knowledge, it's free to get in.

Third Saturday in July (usually), Newington has their extravaganza. Various vendors, some rides/games, live entertainment, I think they have those paddleboats (or whatever they're called where you peddle with your feet), fireworks at night. Free entrance and you just pay for food, etc. I enjoy it and have never missed a year.

Milford has a bunch.

The Fair on the Green is coming up soon I believe, the 2nd weekend in June. The Oyster Fest is in August.

Some get posted here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Downt...9326&sk=events

There's a fair almost every weekend in the summer on the green in Milford.

Here's some other events in Milford:
Lobster bake: Upcoming Events - Milford Rotary
Woodmont Day: Home Page
Sandcastle Competition in August: Sand sculpture competition at Walnut Beach - Connecticut Post
Walnut Beach Arts Festival and Summer Concert Series: http://www.walnutbeachassociation.com/

There's a bunch for kids too. The Easter Egg hunt, St. Patty's Parade, and Duck Race have passed, but there's the Pirate Day coming up. There's stuff in the winter too. Pumpkins on the Pier, Lamplight Stroll/Tree Lighting/Santa around Christmas.

As far as other free events, the Arts & Ideas Festival in New Haven is pretty big. International Festival of Arts and Ideas

Also in New Haven, the open art gallery event: Artspace | Welcome to City-Wide Open Studios

There's an Oyster Festival in Norwalk too that's slightly smaller, but very similar.

For people in the Hartford area,

Windsor has a farmers market that runs every Thursday 3:30pm - 6:30pm starting June 20th - Oct 24th 2013 on the town green. I've never been so I can't say if it's good or bad, but it's certainly free.

GPS use 240 Broad St Windsor CT 06095
The town green is at the intersection of RT 75 + RT 159
If you're still confused ask someone for directions to the Windsor post office as that's on the green too.

Website with more info.

A lot of towns offer free summer concerts. Glastonbury has theirs each Wednesday in July. We try and go but a lot of times it conflicts with other activities. They are held at the lawn behind the Community Center on Welles Street. Jay
