i am going to be moving to the pioneer valley later in the summer, but in the meantime i need a temporary place to stay while i look for a place.

my in-laws live in meriden, and i can stay with them for free. google maps says the drive is an hour and 10 minutes, but does anyone know how traffic would factor into that? i'd guess that the majority of the delay would be going from meriden to hartford - does springfield get a lot of traffic at rush hour?

any advice would be appreciated. i'm weighing the pros and cons of paying to be closer. i also have places where i can stay in torrington and terryville, but those are longer drives. torrington might work out to a faster commute if i speed on the back roads...

If you are going to be traveling on off-hours it's not too bad. I work in hartford with people and they live 2 miles away from the Vermont border. If you are going to be traveling peak hours, you'll hit Hartford traffic and Springfield. It'll get old quick.

It'll be peak morning hours 2 days a week, and peak afternoon hours every day. I'm thinking it's probably worth renting a place that's closer for the month.

From what I saw during my brief temporary time in Hartford 4 years ago, most of the traffic along your route during rush hour would basically concentrate about 10 miles north/south of Hartford.....going up to Hartford it would be from about Rocky Hill to where it meets I-84, going down from about Enfield to that same point. There will likely be traffic near Springfield, but I don't know much about that. Not pretty, but likely nothing compared to the traffic down in the Merritt Parkway/I-95 corridor from Greenwich to New Haven, which is basically an East Coast version of L.A. Good luck!

Agreed. If you're doing the drive in off-hours, one hour and ten minutes is fine. However, traffic through Hartford and Springfield will add roughly 20-30 minutes to your trip.

On your morning commute, you will hit traffic going into Hartford for about 5 miles from about Exit 25 in Wethersfield to I-84 and then about 2 miles into downtown Springfield. This would add approximately 20 to 30 minutes to your 1 hour commute. Coming home during rush hour would be similar. It is up to you if this is too much. Personally I would not do it. Jay
