Yep. Kind of the only place you'd want to live in Mass commutable to the places you can get to from Granby and Simsbury is Longmeadow. It always has the highest property tax rates in Massachusetts bumping into the Prop 2 1/2 limit. The 2017 mill rate is $23.58 on 100% valuation.

And Boston will likely benefit even greater from that. The size of the fish that can afford consuming a multi billion dollar fish is pretty big. If that company keeps the location, I'd expect further growth. Unfortunately for us, at that point the back office finance jobs etc remaining in CT will almost certainly be consolidated within the mothership.

What a lot of people don't know (and even that reporter didn't bring up) is that Alexion also functions in pseudo-venture firm role. Like many pharma-centric biotech companies, they are still a bit skiddish toward directly internalizing new age drug development, which requires labor skills, labs, etc that they don't yet know how to manage. These new personalized medicine drugs also don't have proven track records of scalability, profitability and clinical trial design approaches, further supporting the dividing wall.

However, Alexion, realizing the future of medicine is moving toward targeted therapy, and that most blockbuster small molecules compounds have already been discovered, has invested money into infant and promising early life companies that are working on advanced novel concepts like RNA therapeutics. This will allow them to profit from this uncharted territory while mitigating risk compared to getting directly "into the biz" if any of these companies take off, so do their shares that can now be used to reinvest in a PROVEN drug/concept that has been paid for by the same act that mitigated their risk in the first place. Smart.

Too bad these are not the folks running our state. If Malloy was running Alexion, his solution to shareholders and sick people would be to "raise parking lot fees, implement a cafeteria use fee, and charge suppliers for the privilege of doing business with them". I'm probably not even kidding unfortunately

Most definitely. He interviewed and discussed a whole lot of people and places too, from multiple perspectives and sides of the issue. Very impressive piece, at least in this day and age where everything is partisan garbage that's more subtle marketing than news.

Looks like author is a recent UConn journalism grad. Oddly, the author info is in the past tense, even though just few days old. Bright kid. Probably already has a job at...the Boston Globe...hehe.

No Budget Vote As Deal Falls Apart After Multiple Delays - Hartford Courant

What a clown show. The lack of leadership in the legislature is shocking. At this point, they're better off voting on the GOP budget. Maybe it could actually pass.
