Here's the precip without the temp on it. Keeps it cleaner to see.

Normal Precip:

January: 3.1"
February: 2.79"
Winter: 9.22"

Shown here are the departures. For instance

December 2001 we had less than 3.5" of snow. That winter went on to be the 2nd driest on record.
December 1978 had less than 3.5" of snow. January was wettest on record. Winter was wettest on record too.

Looks like after 1980 kinda mixed maybe more dry then wet. Before 1980 there was a period of being very wet when December ended up with less than 3.5 inches of snow.

Cool graph! Taking out the years that resulted in low snowfall in December because it was dry AND cold, what does history say January and February turned out like? What are the years we should look at where December was warm and wet? Versus warm and dry?

First of all even with 850mb temps below freezing you have to look at other factors to see if snow is going to fall, but basically if the 850mb temps are above freezing, forget snow here.

Euro12z Data. Normal 850mb temp is -4C now. Euro says we get cold for 3 days then back to seasonable. Check out when precip comes in Up we go with temps.

Ridiculous winter. I assume another inland storm track looking at Jan 3rd here bringing in warm south air..

I believe the GFS says snow for Jan 3rd but I haven't followed. Just not motivated. Ridiculous
Please cheer up, Cam. I know your frustration. I want snow too. But as we Mets fans say, "Ya gotta believe!" And Mets fans know frustration. Here's to hoping winter actually gets here!

Another shocking discovery. The only other spot I check and same situation...

Since 1880, 35 yrs in Pittsburgh had less than 3" of snow in December.

Only 3 of those 35 ended the season with above normal snowfall.
12 of them under 2 feet.
Last time with less than 0.3" in December was 20 yrs ago

Now I have to keep checking others.

Apparently December sets the tone for winter based on history here. Will it be a 4th time this year? Chances are slim. We're done. Can't wait for winter 2015-16!

How are you guys liking Spring again? 50 outside! and Sunny! Grass is green. Soil soft and moist. No ponds frozen. Snowless ground.

12pmEST temps. SouthEast ridge flexing its muscles popping up.

10-20 above normal East of Mississippi.

Snowing in Oklahoma. Temps in the Teens in Nebraska

Just averaged your seasonal snowfall totals for when Bridgeport saw less than 3.5" in December. I took out '93-'94 since 7 Wishes determined that December was unlike the others.

Average snowfall for the season when December witnessed under 3.5 inches of snowfall is 19 inches. Let's see how we do!

Cam, can we draw any conclusion on temperatures for the rest of the season? We're already simplifying snowfall, but are temps. just more complicated in general?

Nice work! I posted a graph with how the temps were. Is there something else your thinking?

More disappointing findings right now...

Top 11 warmest Decembers at CT coast (BDR). 2014 is 6th warmest right now.
9 of those seasons had well below normal snow. Will 2014 be the 10th.

As interesting as this is getting, I need to stop before I go deeper into depression. lol
