I'm looking to purchase a new car off craigslist from a private party. I live in fairfield county CT, but i also am expanding my search to Manhattan/brooklyn, etc.

If i buy a car in NY and register there, can i just immediatly transfer my plates/registration to CT without having to pay any taxes in NY?

Conversely, if the seller is willing to come up to CT from NY, can I just register the car from NY -> CT directly without having to go through the hassel of registering with NY first?

It's a pain. You need to register the car in CT and get a temp plate to drive it back. Or have the seller drive it to your house. Then you have to do the "real" plate registration which will include passing emissions.

You will also have to pay the sales tax on the car at the time of registration in CT.

We bought one of our cars in NY and one in NJ both from private parties. Both of us went and one drive behind the other, so we didn't have to do the temp l
Plate thing. Then we just registered the car like you would any other new car in CT, no big deal.

Put insurance on the car and drive it back if they can't bring it up to CT. It's something like a $75 dollar ticket if you get caught. Don't put plates on the car from another vehicle, that's misuse of plates and a much steeper fine. You will need a VIN verification done before you can register it. Any emissions location should be able to do it. You will pay sales tax when you register it in CT. No need to do anything with NY DMV.

Make sure you do some sort of history report on the vehicle, the reports are far from perfect but they are better than buying blind. There are a lot of cheap cars in NY because of salvage titles being reissued as clean clean as well as a lot of Hurricane Sandy vehicles still out there being resold after they have been totaled and then cleaned up to be resold. There were so many cars damaged that insurance companies couldn't keep up and many cars slipped through the paperwork process of being marked totaled with DMV and still have clean titles.

Go to google type in CT DMV bill of sale. The top hit should bring you to a PDF bill of sale that you fill out. Give the seller a copy and you keep a copy. The. On the back of the vehicles title will be a section that you fill out with your information. Bring those two forms and a copy of the VIN verification to the CT DMV, pay the registration fees and sales tax and your all set.

If you get caught without registration, it might not be a huge ticket but your insurance company might nail you for it.
