You will definitely be shunned in Greenwich if you continue to refer to it as a "city". That's a big no-no in town.

I'm gay, single and currently live in Norwalk. I'm very surprised that you think Darien is laid back and quiet. For such a small town geographically, it seems very busy, congested, fast paced and pretentious as hell! I mean, it's a nice town, but I've only been living in Fairfield County for 7 months now and in my opinion, Darien is possibly the most pretentious town in the entire area. I would suggest Westport instead, to be honest. It's nicer than Darien IMO, is more gay friendly, if anything (all of CT is gay friendly, really...I've lived all over the state my entire life). Westport also feels more spacious, breathable and although it's still pretentious, it's a bit slower paced and the people are still friendly. Both towns are extremely expensive, of course.

You should fit well in Darien, broccoli

People are wealthy and they just don't care. They have their own issues to deal with and they are actually pretty friendly. I pretty much live in the downtown area. Easily one of the best towns I have ever lived in!!!! Wish they had more bakeries.

Darien is very liberal. I am surprised you say conservative?!?!?! I've never run into teabillies even once.

Some Jesus juggs a few times, but no teabilles

If anyone else has anymore info regarding Darien and how a family like ours would be accepted, or any personal experiences, please feel free to share Thanks everyone for the fantastic information so far!
I like Darien better, it's smaller and school is better and beautiful.
Westport indeed too "artsy" for professionals, I know what your husband means.

Say what? Westport is barely artsy. It has a heritage of arts, but true artists can no longer afford to live there like they once did. It's FULL of financial and corporate professionals.

I thought this discussion would be of interest to more people in Darien, so I posted an article about it on Darien Patch, a news website in town (I'm the editor). I hope you get responses that will help you get a better picture of what the town is like. Here's the article:

My partner and I live in Westport and if the "artsy"/liberal vibe isn't for you, you'd probably he happier in Darien. Both are lovely towns that offer quite a bit. Darien's history is just that-- history-- and I seriously doubt you will find much anti-gay sentiment there.

I think you're in "can't go wrong" territory and will find all of your choices to be good ones.

Good luck and welcome to the 'hood.

Umm "true" artists? We have a number of successful artists who live here-- but-- you're right the days of Westport as an artists' colony is over.

I don't think we're as heavy on finance folks as Greenwich or Darien. The folks I know range from Physicians to small business owners to chefs.

There is more professional diversity in Westport than one might think.
