Hello! Considering relocation to Wilton for work purposes. Need good public HS for 3 children and housing for 6 or 7. Stay at home mom, so tight housing budget, @$350K. Considering renting for the good schools but would prefer buying with possible resale out of CT in @ 10 - 15 years. Interracial family who loves biking, hiking, and solid churches. Any suggestions of towns/communities? Thank you!
Wilton public schools are outstanding, but the town is also very expensive ($715,000 median price according to Trulia). No idea on rental costs there, though.
Nearby towns like New Canaan, Westport & Weston also offer outstanding schools & a steep price tag. Ridgefield schools are also very good and it's a bit cheaper than Wilton ($631,000 median price)
Fairfield, Newtown, Redding & Trumbull offer good schools are lower prices and reasonable commutes to Wilton, but no place is cheap.
You could head north to the Danbury area. Bethel and Brookfield might be good towns to consider. They have good schools and are reasonably priced. I am not sure what you expect for your $350,000 budget but you could get a modest home there for it. Jay
Thanks for the input! It's hard to factor in miles between areas and the traffic factor on internet searches. How are resale values, in general, outside of FF County? Brookfield wasn't on my radar, thanks for the tip. Moving from VA area where traffic is a nightmare and housing is high but FF is sticker shock, lol.
Thank you! VA has a lot of cookie cutter houses. What is considered the "standard" home in the areas aforementioned; basements, decks, granite counters, eat in kitchen and formal dining rooms, master bedrooms with in suite bathrooms? Is each town so very different?
The towns are pretty similar housing stock wise. For $350,000, expect to get a newer or recently renovated 3BR in the above towns.
Bethel, Milford, Trumbull have some slightly denser suburban areas. Brookfield, New Fairfield, Monroe feel more rural and spaced out - and are more quiet generally.
Most of those towns have some new developments, but were built up heavily in the post-war era up to the 70's. So many homes are older. There are tons of pre-war homes too.
Basements are very common, most homes have them unless they're by the water. Decks are also commonplace. Other features vary widely.

I don't that's quite accurate, for that price you would likely find an older, modest home that has been somewhat updated.
Quite often these older homes don't have master bathrooms, the square footage will likely be smaller than what the OP is looking for.

You won't find as many of the cookie-cutter variety of homes in CT or large developments featuring hundreds or thousands of homes.
A home without a basement in CT is pretty unusual, but it can happen. And, sometimes people will have raised ranches or split level homes where the basement is a finished living area.
Many homes, but by no means all, have some sort of deck or patio in the back.
Granite counter-tops depends on the age of the home and how recently its been updated, though you'll often find even older homes in Fairfield County to be fairly well maintained.
My last 3 homes (all in CT) have had master bedrooms with suites, and I can't imagine a home without it. However, I grew up in a home that didn't have a MBR suite, and my first home in Newington did not have one either. (Both were ranch style homes)

350k will not get you an updated house in those towns. It will get you a house that is livable but you will need to do work on it.
