At least at the Planet Fitness I was a member of, all that stuff was just marketing. I never heard the "lunk" alarm go off (how annoying would that be?), and there were plenty of guys who just did lifts and never looked at the cardio section.

Given that, this was a gym that was converted to Planet Fitness, so maybe they were more tolerant. For $99 a year, it was pretty much perfect.

I seriously think that the town should look into more redevelopment options. I think Kings highway East would be a good area to look into redeveloping. Fairfield is one of the hardest towns for developers to work in. The Conservation Commission and their staff are the worst. Their goal is to turn Fairfield back to the rural town it was over 100 years ago. They take forever to make what should be simple decisions. Fairfield Metro Center is a prime example of this. If the Conservation Commission staff did their job properly, you would see several buildings (including a fitness center and hotel) on the site today. Their delays caused the developer to lose their financing which stalled the project over what were without question very minor issues. If more local residents demanded that more be done, maybe Fairfield would have more to it than it has today. Jay
This LA Fitness is in the Trumbull Mall, just over the line from Fairfield and Bridgeport. It's not much further than my old gym.

That said...LA Fitness is nice, if you're really going to take advantage of the amenities. The pool and sauna are a huge plus, as are the raquetball courts.

However, for basic cardio/weights, I've found that the $10 per month gyms, such as Planet Fitness, are a good deal if you can find one that doesn't get ridiculously crowded during peak hours and has a well-maintained locker room.
The Planet Fitness near me has a reputation for being overcrowded during peak periods.

No, it is practically in Bridgeport. In fact the LA Fitness isn't even new, it's been there a few years. Are you thinking of the new Edge in Trumbull? It's on the Monroe border.

There is a new Fitness Edge in Trumbull that I've heard about, near Monroe. It's too far for me.

Compared to my old gym, a few years old is new.

I know that's too far for you, I was responding to Jay.

One of my friends works near there and uses the new Fitness Edge in Trumbull rather than the one in Fairfield, which is overcrowded.

I don't get the whole "intimidation" thing. When I was talking to the guys at LA Fitness, they said they don't have too many "muscleheads" (they didn't use the term) and that they make some people feel inferior.

I told them that the presence of "muscleheads" doesn't bother me in the least, as long as they are respectful. To try to market a gym as not having "muscleheads" is ridiculous, IMO. Live and let live.

I also don't really understand the focus on muscleheads, since a lot of the people who only use the cardio machines are pretty damn fit too and will make you feel just as bad, if you are going to feel bad.

CROSSFIT! I joined last year and it is absolutely amazing. No muscleheads. No obnoxious teenagers using the gym as their social hour. No "juice bars". Highly recommended.
