Essex can be perceived in many ways, as can many parts of Connecticut.

The town is considered upscale. It has been voted many times in the not too distant past as one of the best small towns in America to live. The town has no chain stores, or fast food establishments.

The town center is historic and charming. Among its highlights the Essex Valley Railroad; and Dickinson Witch Hazel- which has been in town for more then a century.

Located in an idyllic location along the Connecticut river, the town has the noted Griswold Inn, Garvin Arts Studio and the Connecticut River Valley Museum.

When I have visited the town, the people are proud of the town, but have been warm and friendly, and down to earth.

The key may be to find ways to meet people. Since you do not have kids, consider joining any local groups that you are interested in like the Garden Club or a local exercise class. Also check out if there is a newcomers club in town. Good luck and welcome to Connecticut. Jay

Thanks for the info. I love the town itself...gorgeous Main St. with cute stores. Anyone know how far it is to a beach? Not the CT River, I mean the ocean.

You can drive 15 minutes down Rt. 9 to Old Saybrook and the beach is right there.

Just an interesting note: Essex is listed in the book "1,000 Places To Visit Before You Die." It's made me want to check it out. Sounds very ideal.
