Is there a place where I can get a 10-15 lb bag of California/Japanese rice for less than $20 in New Haven County?

All I like is ethnic food, it seems...I used to buy this at Wal-mart in California and before that, in Indiana, but I am not sure it is sold at the Wal-mart here.

I've checked at Stop n Shop and Big Y so far...would a wholesale club like BJ's have this?

thanks for any help.

Heather

Try the Hong Kong market in New Haven.

Hong Kong Grocery
71 Whitney Ave New Haven, CT 06510
(203) 777-8881

If you're willing to drive for Asian/Chinese groceries, A Dong in West Hartford draws customers from as far as an hour away, and even a bit more.

I don't know the name, but there's a small Asian market next door to Great Wall in NH that carrries Nishiki - I see the stacks in the windows sometimes. Mostly I just drive to White Plains and hit up the H Mart though.

That's the Hong Kong Market at 71 Whitney. Great Wall is 67 Whitney Ave.

They're a bit more expensive than A Dong in West Hartford or Panda Market in Norwich.

A Dong in West Hartford is not a bad drive if you're in North Haven, though, especially if you want to go West Farms, which is a mile or two away from A Dong.

thanks for all the suggestions! my Japanese neighbor recommended Hong Kong Mart. I will see about New Haven first, then try other places, too.

The last I checked, the big bag of Kokuho Rose was $14.95 at A Dong and $16.95 at Panda Market. Much cheaper unit cost than the small bags I've seen at Wal-Mart and various non Asian grocery stores.

A Dong in West Hartford is worth the drive. It is a Stop and Shop sized Asian grocery store with incredible prices on fresh produce, plus lots of other stuff you can't find easily. They also have a butcher, fish counter, hot food area, etc.

Awesome, I will try it. Thanks for all the suggestions about West Hartford. My husband, who is Romanian, already has taken us there on a search for exotic cheese and polish sausage, etc.

Ah, gotcha. Do you think A Dong is worth the drive from Fairfield? We usually go to H Mart in White Plains, which is incredible.

Never been to White Plains, but it might be too long a drive from Fairfield to go to A Dong. If we're down past New Haven, my wife would go to Chinatown in Manhattan or Flushing. But, I'm not sure she knows about White Plains.
