Easton
My husband and I are looking to relocate to CT and buy a home in Easton. What should I know about this town? I don't see much about it on the boards. Someone at my husband's office said buying in Easton would not be a smart thing to do because one day the crime in Bridgeport will infiltrate both Easton and Trumbull. Is this true? He says there has been much public debate about this. From what I read on the boards, Trumbull is considered a nice family town and Bridgeport is being revitilized...I am so confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What your husband heard at his office is completely untrue. Easton is an affluent, rural community near Bridgeport - the town doesn't even share a boundary with Bridgeport. Communities around Easton are Weston, Monroe, Fairfield, Redding, Trumbull and Newtown. About 50% of the town is owned by the Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut, the major supplier of water in the area. This largely saves the town from over development.
For shopping in Easton, you'd have to travel to Trumbull, Fairfield and Bridgeport.
If you can afford it, the town (in my opinion) is among the most desirable of all communities to live in Connecticut. The town shares a high school with neighboring Redding - both communities offer excellent education.
Even Bridgeport is sharpening its image - but when compared to Easton, the two towns are completely different worlds.

sliver203 made all excellent notes regarding Easton- it is a mostly rural town in Fairfield county, NW of Bridgeport and Trumbull.

ITA with the above posters! I have never heard of any public debate about this, Easton is too far away from Bridgeport. Easton residents do much of their shopping (like groceries) in Monroe, Trumbull or Fairfield. And there is no shopping that an Easton resident would need in Bridgeport, if you wanted to avoid Bridgeport that would be no problem. The nearest hospital to Easton is in Bridgeport, but the Danbury hospital is another option. Easton truly is one of the most desirable towns in the area.

Easton is a small quiet upscale rural community which is why you do not hear much about it. As noted, a LARGE part of Easton is watershed for the large reservoirs for Bridgeport and the surrounding towns. Most of the town has minimum 3 acre zoning while the rest is 1 acre so it definitely has a rural feel to it. There is virtually no commercial buildings in town except for a General Store, Gas Station, a couple of farm stands and some building related to the water company's reservoirs. Because of this, taxes in Easton tend to be a little higher than other towns.
The comment for your husband's collegue is just plain ignorant. I have NEVER heard this before and it is certainly not a matter of public debate from anyone who knows the area. The towns surrounding Bridgeport are all wonderful and have been for many many years. Bridgeport is a large urban city and has been for over 120 years. Like any urban area it has issues and always had. Since these issues haven't spread into Easton yet, it is unlikely that they will in our lifetime. I would not listen to this person since they obviously do not know what they are talking about. JMHO Jay

I have looked at housing in Easton, and it seems like you get more for your money there than other areas...like Westport, Fairfield. Do you think that is true? Is that a reflection of anything?

I think it may be a reflection on the high taxes they have. Compare the tax bills for similar homes and you might notice a difference. You must remember that Westport and Fairfield have desirable amenities that Easton does not. Things like a train station, shopping and beaches are nice to have readily available and add to the value of homes in a town. If you don't mind traveling to get to these things, then definitely consider Easton. It is a lovely town. Jay

What I like best about Easton is the large size of the lots, the undeveloped wooded areas, and the very lack of "amenities". To me that makes the homes in Easton more desirable than the homes in towns such as Westport and Fairfield. I am a nature lover.

Easton seems to have some type of water there, maybe not a beach, but a lake and/or streams? Where would you go to catch the train if you worked in NYC? Bridgeport? Fairfield? What would a commute to the city be from there? Including driving to the train?

Easton was oringinally a farming town
The rich and wealthy came in to have quiet...horses..or paint
It is a quiet town and they want it to remain that way...and it isn't because of Bridgeport. They won't even let the few owners of commercial propertys paint certain colors or expand a foot or so.
Unlike the other poster..many many many of Eastons residents--that are extremely wealhy come to Bridgeport as Presidents..board memebers or owners of Hospitals...Banks...or other business.
If you truly have the cash --go for it !!!............but if your a wanna be-----you will not be able to afford even the smallest home in Easton--a refuge for famous actors..actresses and other truely monied people--lookin for quiet...fresh air ..and a home that can handle entertainment of guests.
Again-- New comers to this area with out real knowledge--cast a shadow on Bridgeport !
Eastons Farm Market on Sport Hill Road-----Has people from all over visiting for pick your own apples...pumpkins and school visits. ALL RACES NOT JUST WHITE !!!....And the old time residents welcomed you if you had a purpopse for being in town....there is also a dairy where folks from all over go for mulch and manure and such..they are the farmers...The extremely wealthy residents.......they worked in theatre..stage...movies...music...and had interaction will people from around the world. So if this question is one from the New People trying to get into Easton---I feel sorry for the town ! They have never been about " fear of Bridgeport "...EVER !!!!!
They just want peace and quiet after long days of work in fields that pay a lot of money ! Many residents work for large charitable organizations --that help the less fortunate from around the world.
I hope the racism never reaches Easton....Mostly good people live there !..Not people trying to hide from there own backgrounds !
