Bridgeport is really not that bad. I have lived in Bridgeport all of my life. Granted, I grew up in the best neighborhoods of Bridgeport (North End on the Trumbull line and now living in Black Rock). My ex-boyfriend from Boston came to visit me and always relays the story of expecting gun shots and graffiti and finding an underground pool and people walking their dogs. Don't move to the East End of Bridgeport-- that's a bad idea. And my last dismay is the Bridgeport public school system. I went to one of the "worst" in the city, Harding High. I managed to get a good education and go on to get my bachelor's and master's at prestigious institutions. However, for every one story like mine there are 300 other stories of kids who do not fare so well... so think about private school education, Central Magnet, Harding International Baccalaureate Program (I graduated from this program) if you have children. Hope this helps!!

Our cities are divided. There are sharp contrasts in bad and good neighborhoods, but you see that in NYC too. Bridgeport is an anomaly. The more urban sections are all pretty run-down. It doesn't have the culture, restaurants, institutions, etc. that Hartford and New Haven have. That said, there are nicer suburban sections of Bridgeport.

Our cities are no worse than South Bronx, East Brooklyn, East Harlem, North Philly, etc.

I think it's all perspective. Personally, I feel very sketched out and uncomfortable even just driving through the following places, probably because I grew up in a rural place:
  • Downtown Meriden
  • The entire city of Hartford (North End, South End, West End, Downtown, etc.)
  • The Blue Hills section of Bloomfield
  • Route 5 through East Hartford
  • Most of New London
  • The southeastern section of Norwich
  • Willimantic
  • Southeast section of Bridgeport
  • The extreme northern section of Wethersfield
  • Most of New Haven
  • The extreme southern section of Hamden
  • Anywhere in Waterbury east of Route 8
  • Parts of Ansonia and Derby
  • Most of New Britain
  • Parts of West Haven
  • Rockville
  • Parts of Central Manchester
And I'm being dead honest here. Can't stand driving through any of those places (in the side streets, not on the highway). I just feel very out of place and sketched out and uncomfortable.

You're afraid of Willimantic? Come on now, its not beautiful but it certainly isn't fear inspiring!

Well, anytime I drove through Route 66 I just felt very out of place, almost like driving through a third world country. A lot of peope just sitting on their front porch with a bandana staring at me as I drive by. It's like they're angry at the world.

A lot of those places aren't bad at all, and your chances of having a violent crime incident when driving through are much less than your chances of getting into a car accident in the 'burbs.
