I have Water (public) and my quarterly bill is around $40 so $120/yr. I know my parents house on the shore has a well and it cost a pretty penny to get the pump changed out.

I guess I have been lucky. I have had well water for 8 years, house came with a water softener, my first experience being off city water. It costs me about $150/year to service the softener. Other than that I do nothing and have had zero problems. Other than well water tasting better, I don't find either option superior. Both are different, both have positives and negatives.

To whomever above was talking about leaching fields, septic vs. sewer is a whole different matter than well vs. city water.

Every family is different. If you have 4 kids plus a wife all taking daily showers and tons on laundry I would imagine it can get higher.

I always have to chuckle when someone says "oh how cool, you have a well, your waters FREE".

Yeah, free until sand eats the pump and it's 300 dollars R and R and at least another thousand to replace the pump. Or until the pressure tank takes a dump and the pump is kicking on everytime a tap is opened. Or the 200 bucks for a full water test every couple of years. Never mind the cost to drill and case a new well. Water in my area is 300 feet deep on average at 25 bucks a foot to drill and case.
Free. Uh huh....

Also, if you have a leech field and that fails, that could run from 5k to 20k.
Pump for 3k? I have a bridge that I want to sell you.... You got hosed. Even with the lower FFC "premium" I replaced mine (did not require a new well just to be clear) for $900.

Let's throw in the sewer tax as well- I was paying $500/yr in Stamford.
