I may be getting a professional job in New Haven shortly and know nothing about the city or its neighborhoods. I prefer a city life and want to be able to walk to most of what I want/need (grocery, laundry, nightlife, restaurants, etc.)

My budget is around $1500 a month. I want at least a one-bedroom. I am a gay male, so any areas that are more friendly to who I am would be best.

Would you please recommend areas that are relatively safe and get me what I am looking for?
Also, what areas should be avoided?
Are there issues for parking in New Haven?

Thank you all for your input.

New Haven is a great city and while a foodie's paradise, it may not have the best gay scene (Nep?). That being said, Manhattan is only a commuter train ride away so you can visit often.

As for places to live, you'll probably want to be downtown or in the East Rock section. New Haven is a city where a few streets can be the dividing line between gorgeous and vibrant and very sketchy where you don't want to walk at night. Make sure you keep this in mind when looking at places to live.

Anywhere in the immediate vicinity of Yale will be an excellent area, and you should find something nice in your budget.
