Technically that's true, but not in the same sense that we're accustomed to in CT. I think all of Nassau county has only 3 towns, and Hempstead is one of them. Within the town, there are villages -- which are more along the lines of a "town" in our sense of the word. Places like New Hyde park, Merrick, Garden City, etc. etc. are really "villages" within the town of Hempstead. The 3 Nassau Co. Towns are kind of similar to NYC Boroughs

Lets not go down that road again!

Many people from Greenwich went the legal route to make sure their cit... um, big town doesn't ever stops being a town regardless of its population. They claimed that Greenwich doesn't "feel like a city" and that elevating the status to city level could affect property values. Its probably the only cit... I mean big town where its taboo to call it by its proper name.

This happened about a decade ago or so when Greenwich was elevated to city status only to be reverted back to town status.

Few years back I read some place Greenwich needed street lamps replacing...something like that, the residents didnt want the State to pay the cost , instead the towns people paid, that was done so they could keep outsiders using their beaches , if they'd accepted State money they would have to open their beaches to outsiders.... That's what happens when you have a town full of lawyers.

The practice of excluding outsiders from town/city beaches is quite widespread along the Connecticut coast regardless if its a wealthy town (ie. Greenwich) or a relatively poor city (ie. Bridgeport.) They usually charge extra for a special sticker or permit to non-local drivers that wish to park their vehicles within any of the parks with beaches. Not a single park with beaches can exclude outsiders from using their beaches (or charge them extra) if they arrive by foot. Considering that most CT towns and even our cities are car-centric, arriving by foot is not quite an option, but it can be done.

Anyway, I always thought street lamps was something left to each municipal government. Most of Stamford's street lights were replaced about a year or so ago for new white lights and considering none of the other CT towns nearby have this type of lighting (nor do other CT cities from what I can tell, but I'm not too familiar with other CT cities except Norwalk, New Haven, and to a lesser extent Hartford) leads me to believe that it was financed by the Stamford Government and not the state. Even the lighting along the state routes such as 137 or 1 were replaced, but that's not the case as soon as you cross into either Greenwich or Darien along route 1. If it was financed by the state, then the entire route 1 should have the same type of lighting or the portion of the routes that cross through Stamford should had been left with their original lighting.
