Default Apartment location questions, etc,...

I'm a mid 40's White Single Straight Man and have these questions:

In Hartford - is an apartment located on or right off Farmington Avenue okay and safe and are there any areas in Hartford that I should avoid?

In Bristol, New Britain, and Plainville - are there any areas that I should avoid in these towns?

How are the auto insurance rates "on the whole" for these places?

Can I get away with not having a car in any of these locales?

Looking for a studio/1 bedroom apartment not more than $650-$700/month of course less than that is better.

If any of you tell me that it would be better for me to share an apartment in the towns/cities I mentioned in this post or elsewhere - I'm very open to hearing your input whatever it may be. Just wondering how many/percentage of people in their 40's & older share apartments in CT?

Thanks so very much and appreciate your anticipated responses.

Plainville is a suburban town, all areas are okay there. Bristol I would stay away from the downtown area and area's near the hospital/ rt. 72. New Britain is a city and has more urban issues than Bristol or Plainville. THe center of the city is not that great so don't go on High Street/ Broad street or areas behind the hospital (Arch Street). A car is a necessity in Connecticut or you won't be able to get anywhere. New Britian and Bristol do have some bus service, but it is very limited.

I would check craigslist.com for rentals and apartment shares. There are usually a number of listings in the areas you mention. Jay
