My niece and nephew beg to go to Friendly's (thanks a lot Nana and Gumpa!). I am constantly reminding them that I have a food allergy and can't eat there. I'm sure I could find something there I could eat but I'm also sure I wouldn't want to!

What are they?

depends - do you consider Mortensen's to be local? Or Dairy Queen? I grew up in central CT and don't remember any "local" ice cream shops. It was Friendly's, Dairy Queen, Baskin Robbins and that was about it. I think there are more local shops now, as well as more "froyo" shops, too.

No, I'm talking like Mortensens or Pralines up in your area. Dr Mikes, Rich Farm, or Ridgefield Ice Cream down my way. If you want a great place for the kids, go to Rich farm in Oxford....excellent ice cream and your kids can check out the farm animals as they eat it. Just be prepared to stand in line if you go on a warm summer night.

Il Bacio is really good. It's on Germantown Road.

I have never thought of Friendly's as an ice cream shop. It's more of a diner than anything else, and not a very good one either.
Dunks went way downhill when they started centralizing everything and expanding their menu. I have very fond memories of the old counter-service DDs, where you could sit on a spinning stool and have a warm donut and hot chocolate. These days you can get better coffee at any random gas station - the ones I frequent offer Baronet and Green Mountain.

^ thanks -- I'll have to try it. There used to a good ice cream parlor in new fairfield, but it closed a few years ago. There's a froyo place there now instead, which is good too, but not quite the same

I would of written a note saying that the service was terrible and saying we are going down to McDonalds or something. 2 hours is sooooo long.
