I'm considering a job offer in New York City. My wife and I love Connecticut, and if I end up taking the job we would like to move to Fairfield County. The job is in Tribeca, so I know the commute won't be easy, but I would only be required to do it 3 days/week. Our budget would probably be around 700k for a house and we would ideally like to keep the commute down to around 90 minutes. Do you think this is a realistic expectation?
You're probably going to have to look at Greenwich, Stamford, Darien or New Canaan, where $700k will not get you much...probably just a modest house. Stamford is cheapest though
It depends somewhat on the size of the house you need and the degree of importance public schools have to you. But regardless, the only real option here is Stamford. If you didn't need to get to Tribeca, it'd be a different story.
Well, we are currently living in Virginia and we have a 1800 sq ft home with three bedrooms and we are looking for something similar. We paid 315k for it a couple years ago.
Our household income, if we make the move, would be around 260k.
Well since your budget is high, then Fairfield, CT is a great town. It is pretty upper class and you do get a some space depending on where in Fairfield you are. Depending on if you want a quiet area or a more noisy area. Fairfield has both.
If you want to be very close to downtown and amenities go to southern Fairfield near I-95. There are plenty of amenities on U.S 1. You will also be close to Fairfield University.
However if you are looking for a more quieter place go up to northern Fairfield near the Merritt Parkway (CT-15) Anywhere near Congress St or Hoydens Hill Rd is a pretty quiet area, but you will have to drive to downtown to get amenities. Its about an hour walk from downtown, and 1 hour and 45 min walk from coastal Fairfield, CT.
So Fairfield would probably be your best bet because schools are also great there as well. You are also right next to Bridgeport which is a major city. If you want a mall the next town up on the north side is Trumbull which has a mall.
If Fairfield is too expensive or you prefer a cheaper town, look at Trumbull, Shelton, or Stratford. They are a bit lower class compared to fairfield, but still good upper class towns.
Or you could even consider Westport if you want to be closer to NYC. Again its not as high class as Fairfield, but its still good. If you have any questions PM me and I will be more then happy to answer.
If you move to Fairfield, Westport, or anywhere in CT. I recommend you take the Merritt Pkwy down instead of I-95, because I-95 can get really ruff at times. The Merritt can to, but usually the Merritt is always moving, but I-95 can be a mad house at times.

OP is looking to get to Tribecca in 90 mins. No way will he able to do that from Fairfield.

House prices where you're looking will be about double what you paid in VA...probably between 600-1m depending on the town. You have a good income though so you should do okay. If I were you, Id really focus on Greenwich and Stamford....Greenwich is very high end and Stamford is more middle class for the area. Welcome to CT!
