Hi Everyone,

I will be moving from Michigan to Hartford in July to start pharmacy school at St. Joe's in downtown Hartford located on Trumbull Street? It's right next to the XL center. Is this area safe? Coming from a small town in Michigan, are there cute coffee shops and places like that in Hartford? I'm reading a lot of posts about how unsafe Hartford is which is kind of scary. I know better than to go somewhere at dark by myself...Could someone who lives in Hartford please give me some insight? Thanks

Look in West Hartford, CT if you are looking for cute shops etc then that is the place you need to live. (West Hartford is it's own town it's not the western portion of Hartford.)

That general downtown area is pretty safe, stay away from albany ave and anything north of it.

Ditto this. Hartford generally empties out when the workers go home (suburban flight) but you get more foot traffic on weekends. A good friend of mine lives downtown in the apartment building at Main & Temple (I think they are called The Lofts at Temple) and it is fine. Streets are quiet on weekday evenings but perfectly safe to walk to dinner using your average street smarts.

Live in West Hartford. Commute to school. You can take the bus, but you'll be a lot happier if you have a car here.
