AFAIK you can park at some Yale lots for free on the weekend / nights. They aren't super convenient for my uses, but they are free.

The yellow lots on this map (so the one on Temple off the green, and the one next to the Yale gym):

You would most likely have to rent a parking space in a garage nearby if you choose downtown. Or if you are lucky you will find a building with free parking spots in the rear. I had a friend who lived on chapel and park and he had free parking behind his building.

I live on orange and wall street and at first I would just use metered parking spots ( and just feed them through their mobile app) but you have to be careful because they do have a time limit on how long you can park on the same spot. Now I park on the parking lot behind my building ( not part of my building but other tenants do it and we have had no issue so far and I've been parking there for a couple months)

Welcome to New Haven!!!
