I love downtown Middletown. Within a very short walk, you have a variety of very good to excellent restaurants, including one that's all vegetarian/vegan (called It's Only Natural) and several with vegetarian and vegan options. Also, there's an organic market, a music venue called Buttonwood Tree, a multi-screen movie theater, Wesleyan's performing arts center and world music program, children's venues, a very good public library, and other choices of things to do.

I like New Haven too. It has all that Middletown has plus two world class art museums downtown (both part of Yale). For me, the problem with New Haven is that if you don't live downtown, you may have to walk through some tough neighborhoods to reach the downtown. Someone mentioned Westville as a possibility. That's nice but very small, and I wouldn't want to walk to the downtown from there.

East Rock is a safe walk to downtown. Arguably, Wooster Square too. No sketchy neighborhoods, just some empty blocks that'll soon be apartments.
