It has been a while since anything has been said about the proposed casino in the Hartford area. Today the two Indian tribes announced that they are down to two sites in East Windsor and Windsor Locks. Hartford, East Hartford and South Windsor have been eliminated as was the Bradley Airport site which was withdrawn by the state. . The East Windsor site is the old Showcase Cinema right off I-91. The 40 acre site has been vacant for a long time now so it seems like it would be an easy spot for a casino. The Winsor Locks site is the current OTB campus which would be modified to add the casino to it. It has taken a long time to get to this point but hopefully they can pick a site and get moving soon. That 68m loss projection to MGM came directly from MGM - correct me if I'm wrong.

Let's not be naive - when casinos want to move in, they forever have been building cases that lots of customers will come from out of state and are existing gamblers who are doing it anyway. Foxwoods made that same case when they first needed to build support in CT. I remember that well - basically they always claim that it won't create gambling problems in the state with people impulsively stopping there on the way home from work, for example. But instead big waves of more well off customers will come from out of state on planned weekends and spend loads of cash on all kinds of things. This figure should be looked at with great suspicion.

It's a shame that CT and the casinos had such a bad strategy in building huge casinos right next to each other in the middle of nowhere. Gravy train for a while when the closest casinos were in AC. Very shortsighted for the longer term when it was inevitable other states would follow. There is already too much casino capacity in the state and more is coming online close by with MGM. Formula for disaster.

Everyone is so desperate to avoid losing this 68m that they are ignoring basic concepts of supply and demand. Why isn't the impact of MGM independently studied? Happy to be educated if I'm missing something.

It appears that there are now two sites being considered in Windsor Locks and one site in East Windsor for the proposed Hartford area casino. One Windsor Locks site is still at Bradley Airport but the other is a site along Route 20 where an outlet center was proposed last year. Gone from consideration is the OTB site across from Bradley. The East Windsor site is still the old Showcase Cinema/Walmart site right off I-91. It will be interesting to see which of these sites gets picked. Jay

At a Legislative Hearing today at the Capitol, the representatives announced today that they are days away from making an announcement on where they would locate a third casino in the state. The site has been reduced to two towns, East Windsor and Windsor Locks. What is even more interesting is the information provided on the deal MGM has made with the state and the City of Springfield for their casino. It includes a 25% share of gambling revenues (Connecticut only gets 18% from Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun) and $25 million per year to the city. I wonder if Hartford would have been interested in hosting a casino if they had a similar offer on the table. It would go a long way to plug that hole in the city's budget that Mayor Bronin is complaining about. Jay

So it looks like the battle is on between East Windsor and Windsor Locks for the state's third casino. Last week the East Windsor Board of Selectmen approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the joint Indian venture for the third casino. In the meantime, Windsor Locks has scheduled a referendum in 3 weeks to approve a casino on farmland off Route 20 that was once proposed for an outlet center. Will be interesting to see which site gets selected. Jay

Just got an email blast from Courant.com that the East Windsor site was selected as the site for the third casino. It will be located at the old Showcase Cinema site right off I-91. Jay

That site makes the most sense to me (easy access highly visible). The spot in Windsor locks would be a shame, some of the last working tobacco land. But given how much has disappeared in the last 20 years I guess that's inevitable.
