My husband and I (30 something's and expecting a baby) considering a move to Connecticut from Wisconsin next year and exploring possible locations. I'm not sure yet if my office will be in New haven or Danbury so we are exploring the possibilities between them, preferably starting in a rental under 1300 or so. I will also be driving to Bridgeport often for work. We are most interested in a place that is safe, has a walkable downtown with coffee shops and restaurants,(or a rural rental that is close to these amenities) is bike friendly, diverse, welcoming to foreign language speakers, and has green space. Not at all interested in proximity to malls or box stores. Your thoughts are appreciated!

If the main office is in New Haven, Milford and West Haven would be your best bets. If the office is in Danbury, that's a little more complicated. Valley towns like Ansonia and Derby are good locations for commuting to Bridgeport and Danbury, and they are somewhat diverse and well within your budget. You won't find nice downtowns in those places though.

2BR in Milford is not easy at that budget either, but it does fit the OP's description. It's just not very diverse. Stratford is a bit cheaper and more diverse. Anywhere near the train station or Paradise Green would work. Shelton or Seymour for towns closer to Danbury.

You cant even get a 1BR in Fairfield or Stamford for $1300. A 2BR in Milford will also be hard to find. Stratford, maybe, but Stratford is a so-so place, depending on which part of the town you are moving to.

Thank you for these suggestions! The increase in housing cost (we're paying well under market value, $800, for a 2 bedroom rental in Wisconsin) is a big concern for us, particularly if my husband cannot find work right away. We've also been looking at Hamden since we do like the idea of being closer to New Haven.

Hamden would be fine for your needs, but West Haven would offer an easier commute to Bridgeport.

Hamden to Danbury is a bit of a trek (between 40 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on traffic and what part of Danbury you're going to, each way), and Hamden to Bridgeport during rush hour can be mindblowingly horrible.
