Rural means a 15 minute drive to get from your barn to the road and get to your neighbor's house. I'd consider most of CT to be "small town" or "semi-rural". Definitely not rural.

Yes. But there actually is plenty of rural as you describe in Ct. Ive lived in two areas of Ct that fit that bill exactly.

I have been interested in moving back north one day. My youngest graduates high school next year so I am no longer concerned with good school districts. Public school is over for us, thank god.

I think we could be happy and enjoy life in Connecticut, I know I would never be able to afford a place like Manhattan or Darien but don't really have a desire to live there anyway.

I drive a Dodge truck, listen to country music and own a gun, I probably wouldn't fit in since I more conservative then liberal.

If I could be close to my dad in Patterson New York, access to West Point for Army sports, and live in a nice small town with down to earth folks where there is at least one grocery store, a farmers market, and a park you can hike and mountain bike in, I would be totally fine.

I think you'll be surprised at this. For one I live in an 180year old farm house, drive a lift F250 listen to country, dip and have target deers in my backyard (for bows). When you get away from FFC and Hartford to the "outskirts" you will find many folks that fit the bill.

Since you brought up your kids bmx racing, just on the outskirts of Torrington can get pretty rural real quick. Parts of Harwinton, Goshen, Kent, Thomaston, Litchfield etc. you can find places deep in the woods, down looooong, almost abandoned dirt roads/driveways that are relatively far from "civilization".
Doug Henry, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Henry_(motocross), has a great playland, something like a slightly tamer Pastrana moto compound in an area not even close to as "rural" as it gets out there in Torrington.

I love Kent & Salisbury, I think OP would enjoy both. Lots of streetside cafes & "knock around" areas. If I was going to kill an afternoon with nothing really planned, Salisbury is the type of town I would explore.
