Cool Moving for a job in Wilton, CT - ASML

Hi everyone,

I'm just moving to the CT area OH. This is a pretty neat site and I've gotten a lot of input from the posters here. how ever, I have some questions that remain unanswered. Let me start of with some background:

I'm a 25 year old unmarried male. I've lived in the Dayton, OH area for a while. A few years back, my bro moved to the NY Metro area and lives in Long Island. After hanging out with him, I kinda started to like the NY area, so me and my g/f started looking to move to the NY area. So as it stands, my g/f has a job in Queens - Inwood near JFK and lives in Rego Park, Queens, NY, near the Queens center mall. I have been offered a job with a company in Wilton, CT and they pay pretty well. They will be taking care of all my moving and stuff. So now all I gotta do is figure out where to get a place to live. I currently rent, and so far, don't feel like growing roots and buying a house and doing all the upkeep. So I am probably going to rent. Right now we aren't planning to move in together, but might do so in the near future. So now, I need to pick a place that's in between Wilton, CT and JFK. She plans to use public transport into the city from my place so that she doesn't have to drive in NYC traffic in Queens. But here are some of the factors that I need help with:

-- From a tax perspective, is it better to live in CT than in NY? Is that a hell yes, a yes, maybe/it depends, same, no, NY state better, or NY state much better. I'm the bigger earner of the two with an income ratio of 2:1

-- If it's CT, the cities I'm looking at are:
----->Norwalk – it’s got SoNo so I don't have to go to the city to party and I hear parking around South Norwalk is decent and the MTA-North has decent access tot he city for the g/f to get to work; But it'll be an hour commute for the g/f, and a 15minute for me
----->Stamford – Glenbrook is pretty nice, close to downtown. Got the small city feel. Don’t know about parking around the MTA Station, but access to NYC is a little better. Commute for the g/f is 50 mins versus my 25 minutes. If I-95 is backed up, I can go over to the Merritt Pkwy and add 5 minutes to my commute. This is looking as the best bet.
----->Greenwich – Pros: Shortest commute for the g/f, while still staying in the CT area. Cons: Hang out with the snobs that I do not care about, and finding a place that’s rentable with respect to similar rents in Stamford

-- If it's NY, the cities I'm looking at are:
----->Port Chester/Harrison – Closer to the city by train. Longer commute for me. Only worry is NY state taxes. Bang halfway for both of us.

Sorry for making this so long, but I just wanted to provide a clear picture. Thanks in advance

ashwin321 - The closer to New York the better for your GF, but worse for you. No one can tell you which location is best but I will say a couple of things.
  • Greenwich is one of the most expensive towns in the country
  • You will minimize your taxes if you live in Connecticut, but not so much that I would not consider living there
  • South Norwalk would be a good convenient location to commute to Wilton as well as get into NY

Hope this helps, Jay
