This is not an issue unique to Connecticut. New Hampshire is facing an even more pronounced problem of younger and middle aged people leaving as growth as slowed significantly in the auto dependent suburban southeast 1/3 of the state. Prices of properties and taxes make it harder for younger people to purchase, and the lack of an income or sales tax does not seem to be making up the difference right now. Perhaps that will change later on, although I'm fairly certain that NH is now the 2nd or 3rd oldest state in the country behind Florida.

This is EXACTLY how I feel, and I'm 30 also. The state is just too small to enjoy for more than about 20-30 years. I've basically done everything. I've been to all 169 towns, been to most of the hiking trails, beaches, cities, etc. I'm not saying there's nothing to do in CT, but there's certainly not 30 years worth of things to do here. It's too small for its own good.

The fact of the matter is that for people aged 20-35 in CT, moving out of state is frequently on the mind. Heck, last week I was on a plane and this young guy was talking to the lady next to him and said that someday he hopes to move out of CT. It's just always on the mind of most young, especially single people here. College students here almost always leave the state after they graduate. Same with interns, etc.

But yeah, that's what I struggle with. I think it's a good state to live in (outside of FFC), but I can't imagine living here for a full lifetime of 80+ years. Personally, I think it's healthy to relocate about once every 15-20 years in life.

I'm not sure the 1 in 5000 applies. In my group of friends we all own homes and are 25 to 28 years old. It is possible. Granted could we have gotten a better home in another state for less, yea but Ct is our home. We'd sacrifice size for comfort and familiarity.

I have to disagree with nothing to do. This weekend I went to fireworks in New Britain, than went fishing up on 44 on the Farmington river than went to some farms in litchfield and then to my beach house. I was busy and in fact was so busy I couldn't squeeze it all in. You have to look and take charge to find fun. I am never bored in Ct and I have lived here for 28 years.

I actually have a hard time having ENOUGH time to do everything I want to. Not necessarily in CT itself (although there's a ton to do here too, especially along the shoreline and Hartford area), but within all the places you can drive to from here. Remember, all of New England is smaller than many western states.

There are people living in Manhattan right now who are home watching TV because "there is nothing to do." What you do, and where is about choice. We find ourselves in a similar situation-- and most of that social time is doing things with friends and family. If you don't have friends and family, I'm not sure how much fun you'd find it. This weekend I went sailing to Long Island, went to the beach, saw a movie, took a drive with the top off my Jeep and spent some time relaxing.

Well, I don't care for the beach or boating and I'm not really into nightlife or dining or the cities, etc. I'm more of a nature-lover type. So I'm pretty much left with hiking and scenic drives (which now suck that I've been out west). Other than that, I just play video games, exercise, hookup, etc. But I've also been in CT for 28 years of my 30-year life so far. I don't know what else can be done, to be honest. I suppose eventually I could buy a house and that might be exciting for a while, but that would probably wear off, too. I don't care for winter sports, either. The casinos can be fun, too, but now that I've been to Vegas, it just ain't the same.

But even when I lived in NYC, after a year or so, it also got boring, even more so than CT living, believe it or not. Being trapped on an island called Manhattan, with no car is NOT fun after a while.

Also, I can't stand driving through towns like Ridgefield, Wilton, Westport, etc. There is a strong aura of "wealthy, play-it-safe families" in the air that drives me absolutely insane.

My younger brother is 27 years old and bought his first house when he was 25, in Windsor Locks. However, he cheated and bought a house that was priced at only $92K. I would never want to live in his house, personally, because I'm a high standards *****.

In kind: If you get bored after a relatively short bit what makes you think that you'll last wherever you decide to relocate to now?

True. I thought of that, too. Even if I move to a new place, I'll probably get bored of it after a couple years, too. And I ain't moving every two years.
