We aren't completely unfamiliar with the area- we both grew up in CT (central) and lived in NYC for 6 yrs after school prior to relocating down south, so I can read some of the replies with a little bit of skepticism regarding the ease of a Ridgefield drive and have a working knowledge of the train as we used to take it frequently to visit our parents. Am I correct in assuming that there are still some parking spots available at the newish Fairfield Metro station (or So Norwalk from Wilton) if our location required a drive to the train? I've heard the waits for other station spots are brutal.

This thread has definitely confirmed to me that in terms of quality of life (i.e., commute) this could be brutal and perhaps we should wait until something comes up in Stamford itself. (My husband would prefer CT, obviously, but many of the jobs recruiters are coming up with are Manhattan-based.)

Parking is not an issue at South Norwalk or Fairfield Metro. You're right about other stations on the New Haven line being a nightmare for parking.

A commute to mid-town is not the greatest, but definitely doable. Plenty of people do it. But a commute to downtown... that's a different story.

Well comparing apples to apples, (i.e. Fairfield train station to Wilton train station) Fairfield is a better option, hands down. More trains and faster times.

The fact that you have to drive to another town is not comparing apples to apples.

Why does it matter if you have to drive to different town to catch the train? All that matters is how long it takes to get there. Much of Wilton is 10 to 15 min to South Norwalk, about the same amount of time from Greenfield Hill to the Fairfield station. Add in the fact that SoNo has more frequent service, shorter transit time and more available parking than Fairfield, I'm not following your logic.

Lower Mill Plain Rd or Old Post/Oldfield Rd areas eliminates any driving or parking pass needs. (River field and Sherman schools)

I think Fairfield is the best option because it's on the main New Haven line. That would allow your husband to drive a short distance, get on one train, and be delivered to midtown near his office.

Wilton requires either a long drive to the train, or taking an auxiliary line and changing trains, which is not ideal.

Ridgefield is a very large town. Once again, it requires a long drive to a train or taking an auxiliary line with a transfer.

Driving to Manhattan from any of these places is simply out of the question.

All three towns have very good schools.

Stamford and Milford are fine for parking. Do it all the time. Even Westport is doable before 8am.

Ridgefield to Katonah is not bad.

Greenfield Hill residents would likely use Southport or one of the Westport stations.

West Wilton residents drive 13 minutes and get a $5 parking spot in new Canaan if they get there early before 6.30. New Canaan has direct trains.
