Mystic isn't really a separate town. It is part of the towns of Groton and Stonington on either side of the Mystic River. The Groton side is really West Mystic while the Stonington side is just Mystic. That said the schools in Essex have higher test scores and lower class sizes than the schools in Groton or Stonington. It is really just a matter of personal opinion which is better. Both areas are very nice. Jay

I don't have to worry about schools. Which is a wealthier area?

Essex has an average household income of $77,549. Stonington's is $60,608. Jay

Stonington is way too liberal for me.

Essex is better... because its so much closer to all of the cultured activity of New York.

Essex.

Parts of Mystic border Groton-not sure how familiar you are with the area but Groton has some not so great areas-chain stores-low income housing areas, etc.

Mystic is scenic and charming, but unless you can insulate yourself within its mythical borders, you’ll find the surrounding areas sadly lacking. I live halfway between Mystic and Essex. If I got to choose between the two, Essex would win, hands down!
